Where would you go for a memorable weekend away?

DH and I have an unexpected opportunity for a weekend away in early September - Friday evening to Sunday evening.

Where would you go? Open to all ideas, within the UK or short haul. City break or countryside/seaside walks and cosy pubs equally appealing. Ideas of specific attractions to base things round also welcome.

We can drive or get public transport - based in East Lancs so probably wouldn’t head all the way to the south coast or Cornwall.

One of our most memorable holidays was when we stayed in an old railway carriage in Yorkshire. It was just 15 minutes walk through the woods to a really great pub, and only 10 miles from York where we spent a lovely day just wandering.

Paris. I'd stay here. DD and I went 2 years ago and had a ball.

London

If you like castles, stunning countryside and amazing beaches head for Northumberland. The area around Bamburgh Castle is amazing. We’ve stayed in Seahouses where you have a choice of good restaurants, shops and a harbour. You can get a boat trip from the harbour. You are also close for a visit to the holy island of Lindisfarne, which I highly recommend. Do check the tides for that as the crossing becomes submerged twice a day.

You could start by seeing if there is somewhere you can fly to from Manchester for sensible money.

Skyscanner suggests there's loads of options. If that doesn't appeal, loads of places in the UK, depends what you like and your budget. Peak District, Whitby, Lake District, York etc etc.

Rome

Bamburgh or Lindisfarne, the scenery is stunning. Cosy pubs, beautiful walks.
