Delayed baggage on return flight - replacing my makeup

My baggage has gone missing on a flight home (yesterday) and no sign of it yet. Stupidly, for once I had put my makeup bag in the case instead of in my hand luggage so I need to buy new makeup before I return to work tomorrow.

I spoke to the airline and they confirmed I can do this as long as I keep and submit receipts but while I don’t wear a lot of makeup, the stuff I have is mostly decent quality. As such, I am wondering if they will reimburse the cost of my Dior eyeshadow quad, Chanel highlighter, Hourglass mascara etc?

I'm not planning to take the piss - I just want the stuff I usually use.

I’ve been reading that some airlines can be very tricky with delayed baggage on the home journey as they’ll say I would have stuff at home anyway but that’s not the case - I only have one makeup bag.

I called to check and they said to buy what I need and keep the receipts, but I wondered if anyone has any experience of this?

My husband’s case was lost on the way home last year. They delivered it to the door 24 hours later

I had a delayed bag with BA earlier this year - took them about 4 days to get it back to me but they reimbursed me for toiletries that I had to replace in the meantime, including make-up. That said, I bought Boots No 7, not anything very fancy! If you really can't make do with something cheaper, buy what you would normally use and submit a claim, as long as you're okay with them refusing to pay it or only paying part of it if they think it's excessive.

I think it’s unlikely that the airline will consider high end make-up as essentials given their delayed baggage policy especially on your return flight home. They are quite clear on their website:

• You are obliged to keep the cost of replacement items as low as possible in the event of a baggage delay (“duty to mitigate damages”). Lufthansa will contribute to the costs subject to proportionality.

• Expenses for replacement purchases made after your arrival back home may be considered for reimbursement. Please note that as a passenger, you are particularly obligated here to behave in a way that mitigates damages. Expenses for replacement purchases that can be assumed to be present at home will not be reimbursed.

Just ask them the limit, when my bag was delayed I was told how much I could spend, my travel insurer would have covered the rest, but it wasn’t needed.
