I'm curious, how much did your summer holiday cost this year?

How much are people paying to go on holiday this year?

Our stats:
2 adults 2 children
1 week in July to Lanzarote
Basic 2 star self catering apts, small pool, all clean and pleasant. No luxury.
£1800
Spending money approx £1500

We eat out for lunch and dinner each day, visit a music bar/play pool after dinner and do a few local day trips but kids happy with pool/beach/playparks. They could run up and down a wall beside stairs for hours!

I pass by some of the bigger hotels with the entertainment and activities and wonder if we would like that. Would anyone share how much they are paying for these types of holidays?

Just wondering how much people are paying for different holidays and also, as an aside, when is the best time to book for best deals?

Ikos?

We had a 5-week cruise and stay holiday in Feb to Australia/NZ for two adults, which cost 25k.
We have just come back from Crete for 11 days, which cost around 5k, including Airbnb, spending money and eating out every day. We had a lovely time, 3 adults.
We are off to Ireland for NY.
We have another cruise booked for October, but that is subject to cancellation due to family issues.
We love to travel.

Yeah. Our first time at Odisia after 3 visits to Dassia.

sadly we’re potentially being priced out of going in school holiday and I’m gutted. It’s so convenient with 2 small kids

£1800 for two adults and a baby.
Staycation at a luxury rural spa hotel off-peak (June). We went hiking mostly (free) and made use of the spa. Spa treatments were 40% discounted for being off-season. We had breakfast at a cafe nearby which was about <£20 per day and lunch was similar. We had evening meals in the hotel ~£40 per night, no drinks or desserts.

It was so good, we’re going back at the end of August!

@blankcanvas3 Oof! That’s a lot of money. I bet he had a great experience though.

You can’t take it with you, so if you can afford it, all power to him.

Yes, I mean, if I had loads more money I would absolutely spend more on holidays and traveling, I love going to new places. I think some people just are a bit taken aback by quite how much disposable income some other people have.

Yes, exactly this. I'm a bit gobsmacked that there are posters here who will cheerfully spend more on one holiday than I earn in a year. And yet if I earned as much, I might well do the same. You can't take it with you.

I probably wouldn't spend it on AI hotels or cruises, though. My ideal holiday would involve a lot of walking and photography, pub music gigs, and cooking. Some of my happiest holiday experiences with friends and family have included sitting around a kitchen table chopping vegetables while starting on the wine.

This thread shows the Mumsnet perception of the majority of posters being high flyers up for being the nonsense it is. Posters come from all walks of life. There are as many in caravans and camping sites for two weeks as there are doing a one week AI and people are grateful for doing these.

A tiny proportion are doing no budget holidays.

I really took the opposite from this thread. Can’t believe how many people spending so much!! To me a £3k+ holiday is a lot. If I had the money I would spend more on travel though, so I sort of get it, just surprised how much disposable income people have.

You have to divide the cost by the number in the family so four or five people which means less than 800 per person on one holiday a year. It isn’t a lot for the supposedly top earners in the country who supposedly make up the majority of MN posters.

Just done 4 nights in Tuscany with my husband (finally no kids!) for £960 flights plus B&B in a stunning boutique little hotel. Used public transport & trains to visit Florence, Bologna and Pisa and with drinks, evening meals and museum/attraction tickets etc only spent around £500. So around £1500 and it was pretty much a luxury holiday with no scrimping - I'm so looking forward to this next part of my life sans kids!

1K for seven nights in Airbnb holiday house in Devon, August summer holidays, 2 adults 2 kids

We are going away next Easter holidays for 10 nights to lake Garda, which will come in at 1.5K for flights/luggage/transfers and Eurocamp accommodation.

I prefer to stretch our budget over 3 breaks a year in Easter holidays, may half term and August (so usually one eurocamp trip somewhere abroad and two uk breaks) rather than one bigger expensive holiday. That may change in the future.

Edited

That's really reasonable...I couldn't find an Airbnb holiday home for less than £1.5k in Cornwall (2 summers ago) for x4

I’ve been 20+ times and very familiar with what you can do and on what budgets.

Also very aware it’s possible to spend far less and still have a great time, and that’s true for most holidays in my experience.

Everything I’ve booked has been an informed choice, but thank you for your concern….

No problem, any time :) xxx

Jesus, I really wouldn't want to go that many times! I'd get bored...there is a lot of world to discover....but you do you :)

Don’t worry, I’ve been all over the world as well.

When I was younger, I was weirdly fixated on never visiting the same city twice and going somewhere new every holiday. I’m now approaching 40 and have realised that, if you like somewhere, then there’s also a lot to be said for repeat visits.

For me, that place happens to be Japan and we visit at least once a year now. We try to include new cities each time, but there are also places that we go back to in the ones that we’ve visited before. I have restaurants and cafes that I look forward to visiting and I look forward to the familiar train jingles, the “mamonaku…” announcements, my favourite Japanese snacks and drinks. I send pictures to my family of places we went to together on a previous trip and things we enjoyed and it brings back nice memories.

Clearly that poster gets that same pleasure out of visiting Florida.

Do you have the lodge details please? Sounds like something we would like.

if not does anyone else have any recommendations for one?

We haven't had a summer holiday in twelve years. Not because we can't afford it, but because we go before May when it is usually cooler (DH takes a drug that means staying out of the sun) or after October. We're the winter holidaycrew!

You don’t know that other people have more incoming money than you do? Does it surprise you when David Beckham goes on holiday despite the “cost of living”?

Yes but David Beckham is a millionaire what makes you think all these people are seems to me there just the average Joe blogs going beyond stupid money

InTheCludgie · 26/07/2026 18:53

We've just done a trip from Scotland to England to visit three theme parks over six days. Cost about £1600 all in

Of course I know they have more than me otherwise id be getting off all over the world bit of a daft reply really

MotherOfLittleCrocodiles · 26/07/2026 19:01

We decided against a holiday this year because we’d had several expensive ones over the last few years, and fuel prices looked so uncertain earlier in the year. Looking at the prices on here, they don’t seem that different from last year.

ChocAuVin · 26/07/2026 19:02

£3,000 flights and Airbnb 5 nights in a townhouse with pool, Lisbon in August, me + 3 young adult DC.

I dread to think what spend will be on food and excursions Grin

You have absolutely no idea what people here are earning, what are you considering as
”average Joes” for an income? My household income is 3 times the average household gross income,
so course we spend more on holidays than average.

You can always still book a last minute getaway 😀

My favourite holiday memory as a teen was my mum spontaneously booking a cheap last minute bus tour trip to Cannes/Nice/Monaco. It was an amazing holiday and I have such fond memories from it

Dancingintherain09 · 26/07/2026 19:08

£3000 for two adults mid july 4* Hotel (breakfast only) in Rome for 6 nights including excursions, airport hotel, transfers etc. We took €750 (brought back 200) and spent £900 on credit card (I had money in saving to pay off once home.)

We've booked Florence for next year and that has cost £1800 so far but we haven't added on excursions yet.

TheFallenMadonna · 26/07/2026 19:10

Just DH and I, 3 weeks in a camper van, France, Switzerland, Italy:
Eurotunnel: £500
Campsites: about £800 (not all booked yet...mixture of basic and fancy, Switzerland expensive, Italy and France cheaper)
Food, beer, wine, petrol and doing stuff probably about £1000?
