Accommodation Malta for dad and 2 adult DC

I can't go due to recovering from op but DH and DC deserve a short break. Would love specific recommendations for and airbnb where they can base their holiday, a pool would be great but not essential, aircon is essential, walking distance to the sea, they'll want to do a lot of exploring, hiking, maybe hire bikes, etc. If you have actual experience of good accommodation I'd love to hear your recommendations. Thank so much!

Malta's brilliant the coastline is dramatic and the hiking is proper good. A few things that make a difference for a mixed-ability group doing a lot of walking:
On location: Sliema or St Julian's gives you the sea walk, restaurants, and easy access everywhere, but it's touristy and busy. Mellieha in the north is quieter, better beaches, better hiking nearby, but fewer restaurants. Mosta or Naxxar if they want village life with sea 15 mins away less obvious but often better value and calmer for bases. I use to liver here I can recommend Mosta or Naxxar is quieter but also it has all you need in walking distance.
On Airbnb's: Check before booking: (1) Is there actual aircon not just a fan? Malta gets properly hot and fans don't cut it mid-hike recovery. (2) Is it walkable to the sea or a 5-min drive? (3) Check the reviews for wifi and hot water works correctly sounds basic but matters if someone's tired. Ground floor with a small courtyard often beats a balcony.
On exploring: The south coast (Dingli cliffs, Wied il-Qlejgħa north east is so much better for walking) is stunning for hiking but requires a car or long bus rides. Factor in a hire car, buses are cheap but unreliable if you're trying to do specific walks. The bike paths around the coast are good but pretty exposed, so early morning beats midday, it gets far to hot.
Pack way more water than you think, proper sun cream, and a hat. People underestimate the heat.
(I have lived in Malta and I plan travel for families and individuals who need things to run smoothly, so I've picked up a lot about what actually works versus what looks good on Instagram!)

We stayed in a lovely very very central apartment with ac in Valletta. Super handy but very noisy due to local bars and music. Honestly for me if I went back I would stay in Gozo - far more sleepy and no noise issues far more history etc old temples etc but short ferry hop to Malta

I have spent a lot of time in Malta and would be very wary of hiring a car. Standards of driving are dire and accidents are very common. Would also be very wary of cycling for the ame reason.

Yeah cycling is not safe on the road at all, Driving is fun just remember nobody hangs around if you hesitate you will be shouted at. You will spend a lot of time in stand still traffic even in a bus is tourist areas like Sliema and St, Julians. So I would weight up the benefits. Also make sure you stick to speed limits because if you get a fine the hire company will take the fine from you without asking.
