Krakow

We're off to Krakow for 4 nights at the end of August. We've never been before so are very excited. I'm just a bit stuck on what to wear. Is it casual all the way or do people dress up a bit for evening meals etc? Are wedge sandals and dresses worth bringing or should I just stick to trainers and wide legged trousers? I have no clue how to dress for a warm city break!

Depends on where you want to eat and what you want to wear really. Wide legged trousers + trainers can easily be as smart as a summer dress and wedges.

Am trying to remember what I wore but given I don't own any wedges, suspect I went everywhere in walking sandals regardless.

I'll try to remember to post back here in 12 days as I'm going on Friday for a week! I'm packing a couple of dresses and shorts and some wide legged cotton trousers. Some clothes shops out there are very inexpensive so if I need anything else I plan to get it there. I'm really looking forward to it.

If you're going clubbing you need to dress up a bit, but for restaurants etc you'll be fine with what you described - loads of tourists there will be dressed like that at this time of year.

Casual clothes and comfortable shoes. You may want to dress up for a nice night out - I can recommend Piano Rouge - it was fabulous! Quite fancy and worth dressing up for. The rest of the time we were casual and comfortable.

I go for work. I don't dress up particularly and never felt I stood out. I expect there are super posh restaurants that are a bit smarter. Its a lovely city. Have fun!

Comfortable shoes is definitely the way, there are cobbles and the hill up to the castle is steep.

Another saying comfortable shoes. It could also be really hot. I've been twice in August and both times it has been crazy hot - there were sprinklers all over the city

There are a lot of cobbled streets, we went in November so different but 8 would say trainers or flat sandals

We went last December just went smart casual in restaurants. Have a great time it’s a great place. We are going to Poland again this year but to Gdansk not Krakow

You’ll have a fabulous time, Krakow is one of my favourites places to go. I agree with flattish shoes and sandals (I did wear some smallish wedges for night) as we did a lot of walking during the day and I couldn’t have worn highish heels at night.

I visited Krakow in June and also May last year and it was warm weather both times. I'm a man but I wore shorts and t-shirts the entire time I was there on both occasions. My (F) partner was the same. Maybe nicer ones in the evening but I think fairly casual clothes will be fine for 99% of the places you will go. Krakow never struck me as a place where people were overly worried about what they wore to be honest.

If you are going to Auschwitz make sure you have it booked as soon as you can if you haven’t - it gets fully booked. It’s very easy to get there by train.

I'd go the most comfortable you can - trainers, wide leg trousers, and lightweight nice blouse will see you right. As OP have said, it is a fairly casual place, you can wear what you want, and it will be boiling hot in August. Unless you are going to a particular event, restaurant, clubbing etc. you will not need to "dress up" Public transport is great, and uber or bolt is cheap, but you sometimes end up walking about (e.g. up to the castle etc.). Take deet (or similar) and put it on your exposed bits. Lots of the bars in Kazimierz are fab with outdoor areas, but there are mozzies a plenty. Ubers / Bolts won't stop in some areas of Kazimierz (not for any bad reason, they are just not allowed to) so the pick up point can be down the road a bit. Another reason to wear sensible footwear. It is one of my favourite cities in Europe (been 5 times and would go again in a heartbeat). Have a great time xx

Thank you so much everyone for the amazing advice. I think I will leave the heels at home and just take some maybe low sandals for a meal out. Thank you for the advice about the deet as I wouldn't have thought of that and always get bitten to pieces. We have already booked Auschwitz through Get Your Guide so hopefully that will be okay. After reading everyone's comments I am even more excited to go now!
