Would you go to Crete at the beginning of October?

DP hasn't been able to get leave over the summer but has finally booked some time off at the start of October so we're looking to book a holiday.

Ideally this would be low-key beach and eating out vibe, self catering or B and B.

Would Crete offer this with a reasonable chance of decent weather? We were considering Fuerteventura but concerned it might be too lively and windy

Enjoying the beach but not expecting to sunbathe for eight hours - yes
A pure sun holiday - no

SAzure · 16/07/2026 19:38

We did a few years ago and it was perfect weather for all day sunbathing. We did get one overnight storm but otherwise it was very warm/hot and sunny.

IonianNerveGrip · 16/07/2026 19:43

If you go for the east of Crete it'll be drier and warmer on average than the west.

dairydebris · 16/07/2026 19:44

Yes absolutely 🥰

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 16/07/2026 19:49

Yes, I've been late October many times and been on the beach every day. The caveat is that it can rain any time from early September.

Withatraceofmisty · 16/07/2026 19:51

We went a couple of years ago near hersonissos. Was lovely, warm but not overly so. Pool was freezing though, sea much better temperature!

Lexy2345 · 16/07/2026 20:10

I’ve been to Crete in October and it’s lovely weather

TBC99 · 17/07/2026 13:51

Thanks for all the comments which seem to be universally 'yes'!
Im going to do a bit more research and hopefully book something this weekend

We went in late(ish) Oct and it was nice. Pools cold for me but I'm a wimp, the kids were fine. Much better weather for exploring - having been in August where we couldn't stray too far from a pool!

Ezra123 · 17/07/2026 20:58

we went last mid October and it was lovely and warm and the sea was warm as well. The sea was about 24° the air was around 24 to 25°. Our hotel had outdoor pools but they were freezing so we didn’t use them. So what I would say is prioritise proximity to a really nice beach over pools.

SqueakyFromme · 17/07/2026 21:02

You won't fry and just need a cardi or jacket in the evenings it is beautiful, Elounda is very nice

Learningdutch · 17/07/2026 21:05

Went 3 years ago early October. Weather plenty warm enough ( near Chania) but pool cold. Sea warm. Some of the restaurants had already closed which was surprising.

Ezra123 · 17/07/2026 21:07

I believe everything closes down at the end of Oct / last week of Oct, so the start of the month will be fine. We went to Malia area mid Oct and nothing was shut.

BuffaloCauliflower · 17/07/2026 21:08

Yes we went for our honeymoon early October and it was perfect, we did lie by the pool and swim, it was fairly breezy but definitely beach holiday warm

AFigureWalks · 17/07/2026 21:09

We went in October and it was lovely. Stayed at the Casa Blu hotel which was one of the nicest small hotels I have ever stayed in. The owners and staff are really kind and will help you book trips.
Nice restaurants nearby too, with fantastic Greek food.

DelphiniumBlue · 17/07/2026 21:12

We stayed near Malia in October, and although the weather was lovely during the day, a sea mist came in at about 3pm every afternoon on the beach, so no sun bating after that.

blueshoes · 17/07/2026 21:24

We have been twice in late October, in Hersonissos (on the beach) and Koutouloufari (slightly more inland, walkable from Hersonissos up a hill), near Heralkion. I prefer October as there are fewer crowds, hotels are less expensive and it is less hot.

We are foodies and not sun-and-flop people. The restaurants are mostly still open but don't go later than October as that is end of season.

We find October relaxing. Perfect for the low-key beach and eating out vibe. We did not bother with AirBnB or self-catering as food was so so good, we wanted to eat out everyday. You can get resorts at very decent prices.

parachutegirl · 17/07/2026 23:19

Yes, we went to western Crete for two weeks start of October and apart from one storm had lovely weather.

Dilemma999 · 17/07/2026 23:31

Early October will be lovely weather wise but there will definitely be an end of season vibe in the resorts. Some bars and restaurants shut up shop at the end of September.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 17/07/2026 23:48

I’ve done this first weekend in Oct and had one rainy day then two sunbathing days

ErrolTheDragon · 17/07/2026 23:50

We went in early October a few years ago for archeology etc - nice weather for sightseeing, would have been ok for the beach.

TBC99 · 18/07/2026 00:42

Ah, brilliant, thanks all.
I have booked a small hotel for b and b in Makry Gialos, close to beach and restaurants.
Ive already been to Skiathos and Kephalonia this year and very much looking forward to another Greek adventure. Canaries just didn't feel right.

Yes, I would. Or even November, or March or May…

HoraceCope · 18/07/2026 06:26

it sounds a perfect time

HungryHippu · 18/07/2026 07:00

I've been and the weather was lovely apart from one day of rain. We spent that day in the museum.
