My husband is 60 next year and I’m looking to do an Aus trip to include a stop in Coober Pedy as he loves the Opal Hunters show. Anyone been? Recommendations? TIA 🇦🇺🦘🐨

Hi, yes my husband and I went 10 years ago, we did a road trip through the middle of Aus Adelaide to Darwin then West coast. It was well worth the visit to CP

It's quite surreal, the houses are underground, we did a tour of a mine.

We were camping, so stayed in a campsite nearby.

@PrincessofWills Thanks for that. Did you organise it yourself or go through an organised trip. His birthday is in Feb 2027 so it’d be the height of summer then. Would that be too hot?

I've been, its a place for a day or 2, not weeks. Always makes me think of Pricilla QOTD We drove from Darwin to Adelaide and stopped on the way....which is quite far....

Hi, no we just arrived in Adelaide, hired a car with no mileage limit, went to Decathlon bought a tent, airbed etc and off we went. It's a 9 hour drive. So a day if you have 2 drivers. We had 8 weeks so lots of time. If you have limited time you can fly from most Aus airports but I don't think it's cheap. Depends on your budget. There's bound to be a bus too.

I stopped for a night or two on the way to Darwin. Travelled by bus (had a year's pass I think). It was decades ago so can't remember where we stayed. We got to visit the underground homes and pan for opals

If budget allows I'd really recommend going on the Ghan and doing their excursions.

I don't think we went to CP when we did it, but the train itself is a fantastic experience.

You can also look at different/shorter journeys that include that section. We did Sydney - Adelaide on the India Pacific, then switched to the Ghan to Alice Springs - one night on each train.

We flew to Alice springs then hired a campervan and drove to Adelaide stopping at Uluru, kings canyon, CP and Wilpena pound. We were there in February, it was hot but we had rain and rainbows at Uluru!

Clover Pedy is a dump. I wouldn’t waste your time. The streets are lined with drunken Aborigines sleeping it off.
Alice Springs is worth a visit though, and a stop in Woomera

I stopped overnight on the way from Alice to Adelaide and I don't remember it being very exciting. I wouldn't go out of your way to get there, but if you are passing then obviously that's different.
