Johannesburg advice

We have a few days in Johannesburg at the end of a safari, and I've just started thinking about what we might want to do. Has anyone been and have any advice about must do activities or sights?

I definitely want to see the caves at the Cradle of Humankind, but other than that I'm open to ideas!

Hey everyone, I've just got home and thought I'd update the thread in case anyone is searching for Johannesburg advice in the future!

In the end, we stuck with staying in Joburg and it was absolutely fine and we enjoyed it. We'd just finished a ten day overland safari and decided we wouldn't want to be jumping immediately on to another plane.

We stayed in Sandton in Sandton Sun, which was surprisingly affordable for being high end. The room was nice and the facilities were good, and we felt safe around Sandton going for food etc.

We took an Uber if going further afield, and went with a tour on the day we went to the Cradle of Humanity. We saw the Apartheid Museum, Rosebank Market, the botanical garden, the zoo, the museum of illusions and all felt safe and enjoyable.

I hope this helps someone!

Thanks for your update. I am flying into Johannesburg at the end of the month and the comments on your post have got me concerned as we have a few hours layover before flying to Victoria falls. Is the airport safe?

You'd kind of hope so..it's a major international airport.

(Was always considered/ seen to be safe when I went there but it's been a while)

The airport itself is absolutely fine.

And Vic Falls is lovely (assuming they've had rain or it could be a little disappointing, but the whole area is beautiful anyhow).

The airport is safe however I warn you of people chatting to you, offering to show you where the toilets are etc and then demanding money from you.

Family who lived / worked in Gabarone always used to complain of luggage going missing / being rifled through at Joburg airport. Use your scruffiest suitcases!

I had walking sandals stolen from my bag at Jo’Burg airport.
