I love Rome!
I'd say use the hop on and off bus as much as you can as certain areas of the city are further away than others.
If you are going to the Vatican, get there early, especially if it is a hot day because the queues get massive.
In fact most areas of the city get really busy like the Trevi Fountain.
Take a buggy for LO. We've not been with a toddler but I am sure you will have a fantastic time.

Put out a call for Aitch! She just came here (Rome) with her toddler DD and I think had a brilliant time. Stayed in a fab apartment that had brand new travel cot etc, was very central and far cheaper than a hotel. By the way we are in massive heatwave (temp in the high 30s) so hope for your sake you're not coming imminently! Her dd did lots of spleashing around in fountains, think they went to the zoo, parks etc. Vatican - I'd give it a big swerve, to be honest - 20mile long queues full of nice Japanese ladies under big brollies that they poke in your eye by mistake, and nightmarishly crowded once you do get in.

We stayed in Hotel White near the Trevi Fountain and would stay there again. Look at Trip Advisor for reviews and other hotels. I spent AGES looking! I liked the fact we could walk nearly everywhere, bus stop nearby, 2 mins to Trevi Fountain, so each night after supper, we had to take ds (then aged 6) to say good night to the fountain!! Which was nice as the crowds had disappeared by then and it was a good bit of fresh air before bedtime.

Don't come until Sept now is my tip! As Tallis said it is sweltering here at the moment-too much! Chances are it'll be like this on and off now until end of August. Avoid August completely! All of the locals head to the beaches and mountains in August and the city closes down. Only a few restaurants, bars and shops open.
