Is Public Transport Enough for Exploring Rome, or Are Other Options Better?

I'm planning my first trip to Rome and trying to decide the best way to get around. Is public transport enough for exploring the city's main attractions, or are there better options for first-time visitors?
I'll only be in Rome for a few days, so I'd like something that's convenient and helps me make the most of my time. I've also been looking into Hop On Hop Off Rome buses since they seem like an easy way to visit several landmarks without worrying about directions.

If you've been to Rome, what would you recommend? Did you mainly use public transport, or was a sightseeing bus or another option more convenient? I'd really appreciate your advice and personal experiences. Thanks!

If you are staying in the centre then it's very walkable. I think we got on the metro once, but otherwise walked everywhere. The metro doesn't go to that many useful places, you'd need to use the bus if you didn't want to walk.

Don’t try a car.

I second walking. We did 3 nights (I think it was anyway), and stayed close to what is considered the business district. We clocked up a lot of miles walking, getting lost, as you do, and we loved it. The only walk I didn't enjoy was to the Vatican, as it was flipping hot and we didn't go in as the queues were insane.

I agree with other posters. We have visited Rome on several occasions and have never needed any transport other than our legs. Love, love Rome.

We went on the Metro a few times. Italians warned us to be careful of pickpockets. We caught a train to Ostia. Otherwise, we walked!

The metro is cheap and pretty easy. Yes be aware of pickpockets but otherwise it’s pretty easy to use - we used the metro to get to Vatican City which would have taken us 45 minutes to walk. Also to the Colloseum. Only about 3 lines so easy to understand

We've been in the last year.
We walked everywhere.

Look at a map first, and plan what you want to see on what days.

Rome has trams. I always walk and maybe catch a tram if one is going where I want to go to.

We got the bus to the start of the Appian Way. Other than that, we walked.
