Daughter alone in Paris after falling out with friend on holiday

My DD is in Paris with her friend. They are only there for a couple of days. They have fallen out and the friend has ditched her. DD is in the hotel room, wanting to come home. She doesn't feel confident going around Pars on her own and feels the trip is ruined. Any ideas for anything she could do alone, any group thing she could join? She might feel able to do something in the day, but I don't like the thought of her being out alone at night. I don't know Paris at all. She's staying centrally.

I don't care what age they are. The day parents lose concern for their grown up children is a sad day indeed. I will never stop caring and yes worrying about their safety. There are situations where I have thankfully shared my life experience & subsequently given them food for thought regarding their decisions. They are not lacking in confidence, far from it, but they still listen then make their own minds up as to whether to go ahead.

She should buy a sturdy phone lanyard, so that if she has to get her phone out for directions etc it is attached to her.

This is what I use if I'm up in Paris navigating an unknown area, ie following google maps. Phone on lanyard, in my pocket. Very common here.

All these people saying not to get your phones out; it's unavoidable! I use my phone as my travel card, or to pay. It's constantly in my hand.

There are only a few, specific areas where pickpockets are particularly rife; the places the tourists go. Announcements are made on the metro in multiple languages at Trocadero, Étoile, Louvre etc. Otherwise we're just going about our business without being pickpocketed or groped!

Yes, I'm slightly concerned at all the advice to stay in touristed areas as a means of avoiding getting pickpocketed!!

I did get sexually harassed a lot when living in Paris as a 16 year old, 35 years ago. I certainly don't anymore, so either the culture's changed, or nobody picks on women in their 50s 🤷‍♀️

Any recommendations for a beginner?

I would start with listening to FIP RADIO!

Check out FIP : Sacré Français!

Radio FIP Sacré français ! | Écouter de la chanson française en ligne avec FIP

Then you can move on to Brigitte BARDOT, Jacques DUTRONC, Claude FRANCOIS, France GALL, Francoise HARDY, Johnny HALLYDAY, SHEILA and Sylvie VARTAN.

Have a groovy time @NoCommentingFromNowOn ...

Enjoy!

Thank you so much for all the replies and suggestions. The main thing is, she is safe and her friend is safe. I’ve spoken to the friend’s mum. My DD went out today, saw some sites, did some shopping, went to a cafe. She didn’t go out this evening. She is very upset and embarrassed. I hope she has some fun tomorrow. In any event, we need to talk about being properly prepared for a trip, taking ownership of a situation, and being a bit more ready for anything. But for now, I just want her home and after a little bit of time, to learn from this experience.

That’s really good she went out and did things. It must be daunting to be in a big city especially if you’re not used to it. I was 21 and it was in summer and after a college course ended and I actually got a job in an office (hardly any experience!) not too far from where I lived but with a French friend of mine who got me a job where she worked in marketing. It was just admin and they’d normally prefer the Baccleureate but had qualifications and office experience and they used my English knowledge. I had my own apartment though (1 bedroom) for literally peanuts. My French improved no end. I got to know a lot of France too as I travelled at weekends or used my holiday. At first I didn’t deviate much from my usual metro ride to work or walking around where I lived but after a while I explored. Your daughter will have gained so much confidence here even just ordering food and a drink in a cafe. And navigating a metro/street map.

It’s a shame but understandable that she’s upset and embarrassed.

Thank you for the update. And that’s positive I think. Both girls are safe and your daughter managed a few things out of her comfort zone. Baby steps. And the main thing is that she is OK and hopefully will be a bit more prepared in future.

Is she going to university in September?
