Recommendations for December surfing holiday in Sri Lanka with 9 and 11 year old?

Has anyone taken their family surfing in Sri Lanka in December? If so, can you recommend any particular resorts and hotels? I have started researching Weligama but am a bit overwhelmed with all the options.

I'm looking to go the last week of December with my two DC (9 and 11 years old) who are strong swimmers and have some surfing experience from holidays in Biarritz. I'm a lone parent, have a back injury and can't surf so would be looking to book an instructor to take the kids. And it would be good if we could fit in 1-2 days of nature or elephant watching as well.

It will be an expensive holiday for us so looking for any tips to make the logistics easier and get the best from the holiday as I have had a tough year and would like a proper break as well as keeping the kids entertained.

Weligama is your best bet. It's a long sandy strip with relatively gentle breaks - good for beginners and intermediates. Mirrisa and most of the breaks around Galle are bigger reef breaks. There's loads of surf schools along the beachfront, all very friendly. The only issue is how busy it gets. The waves on the main beach in front of the big hotels literally are jam packed from 8am onwards in December. Largely with schools. The western end of the bay has slightly smaller waves and is much less busy and has a handful of schools. Or just rent boards and walk up there.

Further along the coast we read that Tallalah and Hiriketiya have decent sandy shore breaks and are less busy but we didn't get there unfortunately. There's a couple of Elephant sanctuaries in the south and Yala of course. or you can do Pinnawala near Kandy as a day/overnight trip from Colombo.

Lots more tips if you want them as we spent last December in SL. It's a magical place.

sorry just saw your note about resorts/hotels. We stayed in an amazing Air BnB in Mirissa but there's tonnes of nice boutique hotels in Weligama and Mirissa. If you wanted a bigger hotel we looked at this one https://www.weligamabayresort.com/ You'll have a driver and tuk tuks are everywhere so no need to be too near a resort centre.
