Heatwave - dreading holiday in Paris next week

HotGrapefruit · Yesterday 10:35

DH and I are booked to go to Paris next week. The average highs in June are around 23 degrees, which is about the max I can handle. But the forecast is up to 40 every day. This wasn't what we were expecting at all.

I'm dreading it. The metro doesn't have aircon and neither do any of the places I've booked to eat (I've now cancelled them all). We had an assortment of walking routes planned, but none are going to be realistic.

We've spent a fortune on a lovely hotel room and Eurostar travel, so I can't bear to cancel the whole thing.

Does anyone have advice or reassurance or am I just going to absolutely hate it?!

Only seen OP’s responses so not sure if it has been said yet, but Eurostar tickets are movable up to AN HOUR before departure - for free.

we have done it before and just shifted the dates/times, you just pay the difference if the fare is higher.

If the hotel will do the same, then I would go for that. Paris in a heatwave is nowhere near as fun as usual…..

However, if I couldn’t change it, I’d still go and just be up and out early, then inside for the afternoon and out again in the evening.

Really useful to know that if it means you can move to a different date completely.

Passing through from a work trip. Just sat in the train station and outside. I didnt get to see anything. I'd dearly love a holiday in paris. But can't afford it or any holiday this year.

I see myself as lucky to have a job at least when people are suffering a lot

None of which necessitates being so unpleasant about the OPs worries

And maybe think how lucky you are to be able to cope in the heat when the OP is obviously someone who struggles.

I don't 'cope with the heat". I sit in the shade in hot places, like a normal person does. No one sits/walks in direct sun in hot places

It's the holiday section.

If you don't want to discuss people's holidays or resent them having one at all its best to give it a swerve.

I have free will to do what I want. Thanks. I see you didn't reply to the other person who was negative to the OP.

Be consistent at least!

No I'll do what I want, thanks.

I’m Italian thus used to heat but Paris and London at 40 is a lot as they’re not really set up for heat the way med countries are.

I know, I´m Spanish and staying at my aunt´s in Southern England with 36C in a house with windows you cant´open wide, no fans, and those awful wall to wall carpets was my idea of hell.

Buildings in the UK are not built well for the heat. No air con etc

The situation is not comparable! Have a nice day, I won’t be engaging further with you - I’m sorry you’re struggling with not having a holiday

Ehhh. The other person insulting the OP is ' not comparable' to me insulting the OP.

That makes no sense.

I’m in my sixties. No way would I book a holiday in Paris in June, then moan about it being over 23 degrees.

If OP really can’t cope she needs to book holidays in winter or to much colder climates.

Neither would I. But she has. And is now facing dangerously high temperatures. How about a bit of compassion? Is that beyond you? Maybe you're a bit miffed that she's going to Paris and you're not. And she has the temerity to 'moan about it'?

I just don't understand the unnecessary hostility.

I think what people are "miffed " about (not just me on this thread ) is that it is such a minor problem. Other people have real problems.

Easily fixable - if it's too hot - sit in the shade!

on that basis anyone who can walk into the kitchen, into a public toilet and turn on the tap and get fresh running water out of the tap is better off than 95% of the world!

MN isn't an environment strictly for those 'with real problems'. Unless the guidelines have changed.

And you're clearly ignorant about the effects of extreme heat if your advice is just 'sit in the shade'. Especially for older people.

Not AIBU.

If you can't ask for advice about trips and holidays here, where can you?

HotGrapefruit · Yesterday 15:55

kellymoon44 · Yesterday 15:08

She also booked a holiday for summer when it is hot in many places. She chose that. She doesn't have to go

Highs in Paris in June are usually around 24/6. This is a freak heatwave! I never travel July-September usually but clearly June was also pushing it.

Yes yes, I appreciate I am very lucky etc. and a fool for booking in June. I know that now.

I would cancel but it's our big holiday for the year.

Thanks for the tip about the Eurostar changing and the EURail - unfortunately I couldn't get from my house to Paris in the same day as the journey into London doesn't allow enough time for the change with an EURail ticket.

And I can't change the hotel booking as I did a last-minute change because I already messed up dates on my first booking, so now have a non-refundable room... I appreciate that I am laying stupid on stupid, but here we are.

Anyway thanks for all the tips - I've ordered neck fans and towels from Amazon so will just plough on with things and hope for the best!

Hope you have a nice break despite the weather. Keep as cool as possible. 🌸

While the outdoor sections of Musee Rodin are beautifully shaded and somehow breezy, inside the building is like an oven. It felt dangerously hot.

Octoberfest · Yesterday 16:25

I just arrived in Paris and its already very hot (i don't cope with temperatures above 30). However, travelled on the Metro E line and it was air conditioned and so much more pleasant than the Tube in London. Our hotel is OK but IT HAS AIR CONDITIONING and I feel like I've won the lottery!
The tree-lined streets offer lots of shade.
Hope you manage to enjoy your trip, OP

My god, where do you live?! People from anywhere up to the North of Scotland manage to get to Paris on their outbound pass day!

I live in West Cornwall, a 4.5 hour train ride from Paddington, and have managed to get as far as Cologne, Marseille and Amsterdam on an outbound travel day before.

(NB: if you really do live in the extreme North of Scotland and genuinely can't make it out of the UK in one day, you can contact Interrail and they can give you an extra outbound travel day.)

smallglassbottle · Yesterday 16:46

I can recommend a rechargeable neck fan and a small rechargeable hand held fan. Also, some cooling spray or mineral water spray for the face and body.

I would have got into Paris VERY late so I had calculated that it was either the extra ticket cost or the extra hotel for a night! TBH I think at the time I couldn't find one of the EURail seats available at a convenient time either. It got complicated so I got separate tickets (it's not an easy system to manage, I've used an agency before who were great, but then you are paying extra for them...).

Of course I might be thick as custard which some of my decisions are suggesting at this point....

I had to go to Paris in July last year for family reasons and was also dreading the heat. The weather changed at the last minute and it was cooler than expected and actually rained a lot.

I found my neck fan really helpful. Even when it was cool outside the metro was hot. Maybe try to sit in a shady park or a restaurant with aircon at the hotest times.
