Heatwave - dreading holiday in Paris next week

HotGrapefruit · Yesterday 10:35

DH and I are booked to go to Paris next week. The average highs in June are around 23 degrees, which is about the max I can handle. But the forecast is up to 40 every day. This wasn't what we were expecting at all.

I'm dreading it. The metro doesn't have aircon and neither do any of the places I've booked to eat (I've now cancelled them all). We had an assortment of walking routes planned, but none are going to be realistic.

We've spent a fortune on a lovely hotel room and Eurostar travel, so I can't bear to cancel the whole thing.

Does anyone have advice or reassurance or am I just going to absolutely hate it?!

I'm 45. I was in Paris a couple of weeks ago. There was a heatwave. I thought it was fine! I walked around. Everywhere has shade. Most cafes have spots to sit in the shade

But people are different. And at 45 you may be considering that you are getting older - but IME the way my body changed over the following 15 years has been huge. My 45 year old self was a spring chicken!

Yes but the OP is going at a time when the weather is dangerously hot and she will have to change what’s she’s doing. I’m also going to Paris in during this heat wave and I too am having to amend plans.

She also booked a holiday for summer when it is hot in many places. She chose that. She doesn't have to go

Just eat outside in shady side streets. It all sounds very dramatic!

Does it? 40 degree heat? Dramatic? When the OP states that she can handle 23 degree max?

Everyone has different tolerance levels. And it becomes more difficult to cope with (and is potentially dangerous) the older you get. She's in her 50-60's.

Exactly! "Oh my parisian holiday will be too hot"

ObsessiveGoogler · Yesterday 15:13

I’m in Paris now with temperatures around 35 degrees. The metro is actually fine - much better than the tube. At the moment the early morning are much cooler and temperatures reach their height mid - late afternoon. I suggest you try and do everything early.

It's not 'dangerously' hot. I have a friend who lives in Paris. I face timed him yesterday. He said it is pleasant weather

the temperature is increasingly rapidly, schools will be closed on Monday. I’m chatting to many people who live in Paris who are concerned about the heat forcast. 40 degrees is dangerous if no suitable precautions. It’s currently forecasting temps of 41 at midday in Paris. The UK weather warning system would classify this as red - a danger to life!

Isobel201 · Yesterday 15:14

Don't listen to the forecast, just get there and see how it is on the day. If nothing else you can enjoy the hotel and use the pool? Use taxis to get to the restaurants.

Only seen OP’s responses so not sure if it has been said yet, but Eurostar tickets are movable up to AN HOUR before departure - for free.

we have done it before and just shifted the dates/times, you just pay the difference if the fare is higher.

If the hotel will do the same, then I would go for that. Paris in a heatwave is nowhere near as fun as usual…..

However, if I couldn’t change it, I’d still go and just be up and out early, then inside for the afternoon and out again in the evening.

This is excellent advice.
Move it if you can.

Then all she has to do is....eh "not go"

Indeed people have different tolerances and it frustrates me how it seems “acceptable “ to struggle with cold temperatures (which I don’t have a problem with) but mentioning heat intolerance seems akin to drowning puppies! We are all different and some empathy would be great.

No one is forcing her to go though

I don’t understand why you are being so aggressive.
It’s the holidays section, she’s asking for advice.

Why are you so angry about another person being upset about their trip?

I understand that but I can understand her frustration at a much looked forward to trip having to be cancelled.

Alwayswonderedwhy · Yesterday 15:17

Too late now but why take the risk of booking for this time of year. The weather is often hotter than the average temperature.

It just seems so pathetic,

Also why did you write that to me and not to the person who wrote "worlds tiniest violin award goes to..."

Maybe instead of "dreading it"..you could think how lucky you are to have a holiday in Paris? I'd love to see Paris this year. I can't afford it at the moment

And yet your earlier post on this thread says you were there a couple of weeks ago

And maybe think how lucky you are to be able to cope in the heat when the OP is obviously someone who struggles.

Passing through from a work trip. Just sat in the train station and outside. I didnt get to see anything. I'd dearly love a holiday in paris. But can't afford it or any holiday this year.

I see myself as lucky to have a job at least when people are suffering a lot

You stand out as making negative comments repeatedly

its not pathetic to be worried about dangerous heat levels and the disappointment of how it affects a trip

I’m in my sixties. No way would I book a holiday in Paris in June, then moan about it being over 23 degrees.

If OP really can’t cope she needs to book holidays in winter or to much colder climates.

And yet there you are...also being negative...about me! People never see their own behaviour . It's funny
