Can anyone with local knowledge help me please?

We need to get from Florence airport to Rome, with big suitcases.

What's the best way to do it please?

TIA

tram to station then train to Rome?

The trains are cheap and frequent. You can buy tickets on the Trainline app in the UK.

Cab from airport to station. Train from Florence to Rome is easy and direct. The first class ones give you a little snack box delivery like you get on planes. Luggage is no problem.

Rome is probably Rome Termini and Florence is Firenze Santa Maria Novella. These are the two main and central stations, anyway. It’s about a one and a half hour journey. Usually costs around £45-£50, unless you have a youth card (29 or under, so better than in UK) or a senior (60 plus).

Agreed, trains are not expensive in Europe

Trains are very easy in Italy, and you can book online before you go, or buy your tickets at the station.
Are you sure it's Florence airport, because it's used very little? Most people flying out to Florence go via Pisa.

Agree with this. Look on seat61.com for an explanation of how trains and tickets work in Italy.

I'm going to another European country soon and need to make a journey somewhere with 2 or 3 changes but I've learned I can buy a day pass for the whole country (except the highest speed trains which I won't need anyway) for not very much and I can just get this ticket from a machine on the day although I could buy it online in advance too. Makes it very easy as I don't need to worry about getting on specific trains.

I think the problem is that trains are so awful and expensive if you don't book months in advance in the UK that it doesn't occur to us that they're much better in other countries.

Rome2rio.com is also good to compare the available options between places.

If you're flying to Pisa you could use left luggage at Pisa station and go and have a look at the Campo di Miracoli where the leaning tower is. Then get the train to Rome. It's easy. It's not the nicest around the station in Rome so keep a close eye on your things.
