Turin?

has anyone been for a short break? I have a couple of nights we could make work and I’ve done most other obvious cities. Plus I want somewhere with a short trip from the airport.

Yep, it was lovely but very hot when we went. We went there to see a concert but would happily go back again. As you can imagine, the cafes were fantastic.

Fly to mxp and get train to lake como, better and less hot.
Torino better in winter months. Too hot and busy now.

Have been to Turin by train twice in autumn, it was lovely. There are lots of arcaded streets for shade if hot and shelter if wet. Great food, not massively crowded. Wonderful museum of the mountains up on the hill on the south? side. Go!

i really don’t want to try como in the short time we have. I’ve survived cities in the summer before, just want somewhere quick really.

Ok this sounds good and a pp had a good time.

Catch a bus from central Turin to Sassi station & ride the funicular railway up to Superga. It’s best done early though, before the crowds come.

We went to Turin for 2 nights in August two years ago and I unexpectedly loved it. It was really nice to wander around. Food was fab and felt less touristy and more Italians on holiday than other Italian cities we’d been to. We went to the car museum (I’m not into cars but it was really interesting). Also the film museum - also very good. Lots of nice shops to check out. Would really recommend.

Oh @Pandoreathat does sound promising. We went to the Fellini museum in rimini and it was great. I’ve found flights that give us almost two full days

Excellent choice! Turin is gorgeous and so unique, like most Italian cities! Very elegant with amazing bookshops and cafés! You will have a gorgeous time.

This sounds good then. Any hotel recommendations? I bought the flights I kept looking at, now need hotel and transfer from airport.

Turin Airport has a train station on site that takes you into the city in 20-30 mins and stops at a few different stops in the centre of town. I haven’t actually stayed in Turin itself before, but I’d recommend the train vs trying to get a taxi at peak times. The roads between the airport and the city are awful. It can take almost an hour to get to fairly central locations, and I assume you won’t have much luggage for a 2 day break, so take the train and book a hotel near a station.

Turin is lovely. We got the train from Paris so can't comment on airport transport.

The cinema museum in the Mole Antonelliana with the glass lift is great. Turin is the centre of the Italian slow food movement so there is amazing food everywhere including the aperitivo hour where most bars will offer a snack with your drink - everything from a plate of tiny bites to huge help yourself buffets.

It is a beautiful city to wander around and the public transport is great. The.centre has collonaded streets ahich is great if it is hot or raining as you get shelter and shade while walking outside. I would also second getting the sassi superga railway, the views from the top are great.

In terms of hotels we stayed at the Hotel Torini Lingotto Congress, it is in an old converted Fiat factory and fascinating if you are into architecture (or a film fan as the roof top test track was used to film the car chase scene in the Italian
Job). The only down side is you need to get the metro or tram back in to the city centre but it is a short journey.

If you do stay in Lingotto then you must go to Eataly - it is a market and food hall with the most amazing food - it pretty much started the modern food hall/market tradition.

A tip for the cinema museum, there is always a long queue outside for the scenic lift, if you are going into the museum itself you can ignore this and go in through the other door with little or no queuing.

I don't want to ruin the full surprise but be careful if you or any of your party struggle with heights (I learnt my lesson when I took Mr Monkey on it and he thought it was just a lift to the roof.)

We loved the Valentino Park when the weather became very muggy and tiring. It's huge and lovely.
