Dog stops en route to Inverness

locket2009 · 12/06/2026 16:50

I am travelling from the North east to Inverness later this month as a family with our dog. The trip is approx 330 miles .

we will be travelling A1 to Edinburgh then m90 onto A9

Obviously due to length of journey we will be making a few stop to stretch legs, toilet stops and for food etc. Just wondering if anyone can recommend anywhere on route or not too far from it that’s suitable for dogs (and two teenagers and two adults !)

planning on leaving early around 7am so we have plenty of time an can break the journey up

Thanks

Also Ruthven Barracks beside Kingussie. Or, detour slightly at Dalwhinnie to Pattack Falls. Or Aviemore, plenty of dog walking opportunities there.

I always buy fuel at Perth as it’s cheaper than the highlands, there’s a Tesco extra and park next door.

Pity you're not going the A90. My son's greyhound gets a free sausage at the legendary Horn cafe when they're travelling 😋

Do the A697 through Coldstream and Wooler much nicer route than the A1. Takes same amount of time. No duel carriage way but not loads of big lorries either. I come from Newcastle and live in Edinburgh so still visit my dad and much prefer this route. Coldstream petrol station is always miles cheaper for some reason.
