Does anyone have any tips for really useful things to take away with them when travelling. It’s just a short haul trip bit long haul too? Things that have made life easier. I have just discovered packing cubes…but late to the game but have really organised my suitcase!

Keep prescription meds in the packet with your name on, I've never had a problem.

Thanks .

I’ve read before about someone placing a Boots order for shampoo, conditioner, creams, shower gels and SPF to collect in Departures. That’s well over a kilo if you’re a family of 4. I know someone has to carry it from there onwards but DH always has an empty rucksack with just a book inside.

I’ve never done it though.

We usually fly hand luggage only and do this.

I agree. I have packing cubes but they made my luggage too heavy.

I have a plastic carrier bag for laundry and a plug extension with 4 on the end so that we don’t need many adapters.

Most holidays for us are on the go so no need for beach towels etc.

We use mini shampoo etc for short haul and long haul for weight reasons.

My DC are in their 20s so now travel alone.

DS is vegan so he packs protein bars just in case.

Both have Turtl head supports and Snoozebands so that they can sleep on a long haul flight. Apparently they are game changers for them.

Packing cubes too heavy? Mine are mesh, if they hit 110gs I’d be surprised

Just to ask anyone......I used to travel a lot but havent now been abroad for ages. What's the situation with having things like painkillers etc in your handbag. I know it's probably a dumb question but with all the smuggling that goes on these days I've started to wonder if in some countries they could get funny about any kind of medication in your bag.

I never had issues with Paracetemol and Ibuprofen. But if you have anything prescribed then keep it in your hand luggage, in the original box with the prescription label.

If you have anything really strong, some countries do have lists with forbidden items and you may need to get a permit. Some ME countries are very strict.

Medication is normally also outside the 100ml limit but again, you then need the prescription.

Just weighed mine.
4 = 340g

I just count out the number of tablets for the number of days! For Europe.
Was in central Asia last year and often to Abu Dhabi and for those definitely keep packets and a copy of your prescription (tho no one has ever been even mildly interested).
Check the country’s website for drugs that are not allowed.

If you’re travelling long haul, I can’t recommend an AirFly enough - it lets you can connect your wireless headphones to the plane tv, so much comfier on the ears than the basic headphones you get given!

Wouldn't you want your nicest pants and socks for holiday?

Not to mention that your stuff is filling up landfill in someone else's country. Not very responsible or kind.🙁

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 12/06/2026 20:34

I keep those diddy jam jars you get with an afternoon tea or scone and clean them to decant chilli flakes or dried herbs into for self catering holiday in the uk.

😂What's the spoon for ? To gouge someeone's eye out when they nick your window seat ?

Things I have recently discovered are a soap bag that lets the soap dry but also doesn't leak water. Soap and silicone toiletries remain in my toiletry bag year-round (& also a little pot of deodorant - I use simply effective and put in an old eye cream pot). The other new discovery (from some Germans I was on a trip with) is a bite wand that you stick in your mobile phone to heat up and then put on the bite to reduce the itching. One thing I never travel without is a sarong - used as a scarf/blanket for flights and other journeys, as a shawl, skirt and beach/pool towel.

Alouest · 14/06/2026 19:07

What is the soap bag thing, please? That sounds really useful.

reallyagainplease · 15/06/2026 10:01

@Bluesclues1The airfly things, do they just hang from the port or do you support them? Thinking about durability. Also those that use the headband earphones, can others hear what you’re listening to? Do they get hot? In the menopause era and need to consider this!

I use the leg from an old pair of tights! If you tie a loop in the end you can loop it around your wrist as you use the soap & then hang it up & it dries quickly. No dropping the soap!

this is also excellent for camping - hang the soap on a post of tree near to where you wash hands etc.

Alouest · 15/06/2026 12:25

Thank you so much, what a good idea!

Hotel spoons are usually tiny 😉

It just hangs from the port but it’s very lightweight so never had an issue. No one can hear whatever is coming out of my headphones but I’ve got decent ones and hate having them too loud - I wore them the whole way to Hong Kong and back a few months ago and didn’t find them getting too uncomfy or hot.

Really enjoying this thread OP and so useful as we’re off to Berlin later this year … first time flying for a few years and first time DD has ever had to be consider hand luggage only. Her face when we told her 😂 (she’s 17) “WHAAAAT? But where will I put my shopping that I’ll buy?!!!”. She’s come down from the ceiling now but any hacks are gratefully received!

potatoe can I ask how you get on with these? I’ve read a few reviews on boots saying they don’t always get through a security? Thanks

I have been through airport security with them on 2 trips (so 4 airports) and never had a problem

I'm very sensitive to earpods/headphones so find it very uncomfortable when watching films on long haul flights. So I bought what is essentially mini speakers in a fabric headband. Complete gamechanger, very comfortable, sound quality is great and also doubles as an eye mask if you want to sleep.

Please could you post a link? I've been looking to buy some of these.

Great thread too OP.

I travelled for 6 months and I can only say the most under estimated travel essential is a travel cutlery set 😁. It is super useful for eating salads, yogurts, or fruits from the supermarkets while you're on the go. I carry this set everywhere even on short haul holidays, you never know when you might need it especially if you're travelling with kids.

Giantmarshmallowbum · 16/06/2026 19:11

I always put a pair of hotel slipped in my hand luggage. Wear them on the plane so I can take off my shoes but go to the loo without having to faff. Bin them at the end.

How good are these to cut a roll? I currently have a metal set but that is not good for hand luggage only travel.

i always take cutlery and a small food container.
