Passport renewal query

Passport query.
My passport is still in my married name. Got it just as was splitting from exh. Expires 14th September 2027.
I want my new passport to have my.maiden name on it.
I'm travelling abroad in July and November this year, then in late April next year.

When should I renew so I don't fall foul of the '6 months left on your passport on your return ' rules?

I definitely don't want to get another 10 year passport with stupid exh's stupid name on it!

I can't get my head round it!

After my trip in November?

What's the issue date though? It needs to be no longer than 10 years after that. Different countries have different rules around how long you need left on your passport on your return date so also check that.

Thanks Brexit!

I'd say 2 months before your April trip (to maximise the time it'll then be valid. If you don't really care about a couple of months "extra", then as soon as you get back in November.

It will be a bit longer than a standard renewal in theory if you're changing your name, but I had a first passport for my dual-nationality child born abroad only take about three weeks a couple of years ago.

TreesAtSea · 26/05/2026 21:38

You only need 3 months, not 6, remaining on your passport for EU countries. So you'd be fine for all of the trips you mentioned.

WheretheFishesareFrightening · 26/05/2026 21:41

I’d do it as soon as I got back from the November trip. You could probably do it in September 2027 though if you cared about wasting months (and assuming no further trips from those you’ve articulated).

Ok, so early in the new year.
Greatly appreciated ! thank you

I'd leave it until after the April trip if you don't go to no EU countries and aren't planning to go away in June/July 2027.

do check what paperwork you need for a name change, I didn’t bother in the end as it was a faff

I'm prepared to faff. Can't get rid of it soon enough.

Hello again. I've been invited to the Canaries in January. Would it be pushing it to do the passport AFTER the late November trip?

Not really. Mine came back within a week when I applied for it in the winter

You don't need to renew it until after the January Canaries trip, its got another 8 months validity after that. I'd leave it until after April 2027 although if you're likely to go away next summer you might need to be careful with timings.

Although if you're keen to change your name on your passport, you could do it sooner but obviously you need to be careful that your passport always matches the name your flights are booked in.

Are all these trips booked in your current name as per your current passport? Don’t get the name change renewal done until after the last one in April as you would otherwise have to change the name on the bookings which can incur steep fees. You will still be comfortably within the three months validity needed for trips to the EU.

JuneJoys · Yesterday 00:58

Personally I'd do it after the April trip.

i just had my renewal back inside a week, I don't imagine even with reverting to your maiden name it will take much longer.

Enjoy all your holidays!! & having ditched the cock!!

What name have all of the trips been booked in…

TeamGeriatric · Today 18:42

It's 3 months that need to remain at time of planned exit from EU country, renew after April 2027 trip. Over May half-term I flew and returned from an EU country on a passport that expires in September 2026. There was exactly 4 months left on it on our return date. No issues whatsoever. I have yesterday applied for a new passport as going to Africa in August and need 6 months validity.
