Looking at taking 2 children, 6 and 9 to Helsinki for a few days in mid August. Can anyone recommend the best way to spend a few days?
Keen to see something ‘authentic’ and chat gpt has thrown a lot of ideas up, but just want to hear if from people who have done it themselves.
Aware there are beaches but the potential algae situation would be need to be factored in.
Any day trips, beach trips etc very much welcomed.

No kids, but we really enjoyed The Fortress of Suomenlinna on a sunny day and the museum of contemporary art on a wet day- more interactive than we expected.

@Alexandra84 can you pm me on here, I have been there recently, and knowing that my cousin was going shortly after, I sent her loads of info in a google doc and happy to send it on. I thought one of the nicest things to do is to Seurasaari open air museum ( it is on an island nearby Helsinki). It is reachable by bus (takes maybe 20 mins) there are around 80 old Finnish buildings that have been left intact (or rebuilt as they originally were) reachable over a lovely white bridge, all well documented and signposted - it is great for kids to explore - proper nature and history stuff. It was on our pass, so for that, we got to go in some of them, but you if you don't need to go in them (and I would argue, you really don't, most are a bit underwhelming once in them, and they are not that interesting for kids) most people just walk over the bridge and have a wander around for free, there are loos etc....great place, probs need about 2-3 hours. HTH x

The market hall by the harbour is good for picking up picnic snacks and an interesting place to wander around choosing.
