Looking for a nice hotel for 4 nights or so in October. Want to do the usual tourist stuff. Thanks.

We stayed at the Riu Palace, it was fab. A bit out of the main city of Funchal but with a regular hotel minibus in and out. Great trips, we did the cable car and toboggan ride as well as the North and South trip.

Last xmas I stayed at Hotel Jardins D’Ajuda, Jet2 holiday with Tui, picked up at airport. 3 star but clean and spacious with 24/7 security, inside/outside pool and food was good. 30 minute coastal walk to Funchal. 3 minute walk to pick up point for Lido tours, highly recommended. If you opt for a levada walk be aware some are steep, not for me with vertigo😀

I recommend Quinta Da Casa Branca. Beautiful gardens, excellent restaurant and great building.

Porto Mare by Porto Bay is absolutely gorgeous, went there last year. It’s lovely.

We’ve stayed at the Enotel Magnolia three times and the Next Savoy Signature. They were both lovely but Next was gorgeous. Not too far away from the town itself and not in the super busy built up Lido area either - love Madeira

It might not be your thing at all but we love Three House Hotel, a really cool vibe, nice cocktails, pool on roof terrace and great service.

The Riu Palace was downgraded a couple of years ago. We loved it previously, but got caught out in 2023, not realising it had been demoted as we'd booked it pre-lockdown and had it cancelled over and over. They never informed us. Food was nowhere near as good, cocktails were all premade in big plastic containers and the buffet was a free for all of screaming kids, tripping you up. They no longer do the 2 sittings for dinner.

Quinta Jardins de Lago. It's amazing. Look for Colombo (he's a legendary giant tortoise)!! Beautifully kept botanical gardens and fabulous hotel. Out of the main strip of hotels too and delicious food. We loved it.

We love Reid’s Palace. Just beautifully relaxing and a bit old school. Nice walk down the hills in Funchal for dinners out

Cliff Bay, Royal Savoy

Musicaltheatremum · 12/05/2026 23:03

I'm looking at Madeira so this is a useful thread. I stayed at the Savoy when there was just one hotel in 1992!

I like the Royal Savoy (not the new Savoy, the older one right on the coast). Just a few minutes stroll into the centre of Funchal, and there’s an excursions office on site. Breakfast by the pool is lovely. I usually take a junior suite at pool level, the views are still good and I like a sunrise wander round the gardens taking in the ocean.

Agreed.... ask in advance for a high sea view room (most are sea view).

The Cliff Bay Hotel is gorgeous. We’ve stayed there twice. Five star, beautifully positioned and equipped. Stay a week if you can. A bit far for five days.
