Crete recommendations for culture, food and beaches in autumn

Hi we're looking to visit Crete for a week in Sept/Oct and looking for recommendations on places to stay around Chania (we think, but open to suggestions). We're in our 50s, like culture and food. I'd like to be nearish a beach as I like to swim. We'll have a car so we can be flexible. I haven't been to Crete since the 80s so I'm looking forward to reacquainting myself. Thanks for any tips.

Kalyves is a small, pretty town with some lovely beaches.

Marathi beach is our favourite place - it’s where a lot of the locals go - beautiful coves and quite a few tavernas on the beach that serve delicious food - there are a few airbnbs/villas within walking distance.
