I'm wondering about our itinerary and whether we can do grindewald first and lauteruan in one day from Lucerne ?

I think it depends on what mode of transport you are planning. If you are using train then I would say it’s best to pick one town.

By car you will be able to take a more direct route and you can probably do both in a day.

by train? yes, but it will be long day. I would do Grindelwald first thing as you need to be off the mountain by 4 or 5(depends on season) and take train to Lauterbrunner spend an hour there and back to Interlaken for train to Lucerne.

Following as we have 4 nights in lauterbrennen this summer, interrrailing. I've not planned anything yet so following with interest

have a look at a blog swissfamilyfun. There is so much to see there it wiĺl be hard to pick. I used mainly that page in my planning, pictures dont do it justice though. Bear in mind that weather can spoil plans, we went last week of May and last week of August and both times we lost 3 days to bad weather and had to adjust plans. (we did Caves and lake ferry on rainy days). I also recommend getting swiss travel pass and bringing some snacks/breakfast food, as it really is super expensive there.

You could but it takes a while to go between the two plus the train from Lucerne over the Brunnig pass, changing at Interlaken. You could start at one take the mountain train up to Kleine Scheidegg then down the other side, probably at least 90 minutes travelling. Alternatively go to Grindelwald, train back to Zweiluschenen and then change for Lauterbrunnen, possibly quicker but less scenic. Tbh not sure you would have much time to do more than travel around on a day trip.

what was your query about Rigi? That is much nearer Lucerne and is a single peak.

SwissEscape · 04/05/2026 07:16

We will have a car but for anything we could also take the train .
Depending on train costs of course.

I don't know which one to do Titlus or rigi which one is most scenic. Titlus looks fun with lots of activities in the snow etc but is rigi more scenic ?

By train / public transport?

So you’d do Luzern - Lauterbrunnen (about 2.5 hours), Lauterbrunnen - Grindelwald (about 40 minutes) and then Grindelwald - Luzern (about 2.45 hours)?

I suppose you could, yes. But it really depends on whether you’ve just want to be there and done with it or want to experience a bit more…

Rigi is a single mountain and a great destination for one day imo!

(edit: just saw that you’d do Grindelwald first and then Lauterbrunnen second, but my point still remains…)

Rigi is quicker to get too. If you like hiking and looking at views it’s fantastic. There is also a spa - children can go on too. Some playgrounds and it’s just lovely. One of my favorites.
For Rigi you can take the boat from Lucerne to either Vitznau or Weggis - depending if you want a cable car or Seilbahn 🚠 to the first station. Then it’s railway. Or the train to Arth and then the rack railway.
Titlis is higher. More variety of cable cars. Lots of things to do that are not hiking.

Personally I like Brunni Engelburg. There is a barefoot trail at the top. A beautiful hike that’s easy with panoramic views back to the top of the cable car. A nice restaurant with a great terrace at the top of the big cable car and also a toboggan run. Slightly less tourists as well, more locals. That would be my pick. Plus you can have a wander round Engelberg afterwards and go into the cheese making shop at the Kloster.

LIZS · 04/05/2026 07:52

Titlis is more scenic and dramatic. The ride up an adventure in itself on a revolving cablecar and over significant drops. Recommend the suspension bridge at the top! Engelberg is a nice mountain resort to walk around with a cheese making minastery. Rigi is lower, trains mainly and you can take an easy hike from summit down to next station. Alternative is Pilatus which has a toboggan run.

@Ritaskitchen thanks , we can walk but we are going in high summer and don't like heat and we are not good hikers

At altitude it tends to be cooler but sun more intense.

SwissEscape · 14/05/2026 07:02

I think we will go to pitaus and Titlus . I have read titlus has lots of building work as well

Not what you've asked for, but Wengen is beautiful and a great centre for a week, so many trains, cable cars etc including to Grindelwald. Though the weekly pass is quite expensive.
