I am going to meet a friend who is having a hard time in Birmingham. I am looking for a hotel
and somewhere nice for dinner/drinks and possibly dancing. Contemplating a brunch type venue if I can find anywhere suitable. Any tips gratefully received

Manahatta - Temple St

Assuming good budget, for hotels in city centre: Du Vin or The Grand.

Meals, Mowgli in the train station. It's upstairs so you can't tell.

There are plenty of eateries around Brindley place, which is just off Broad Street where you will also find clubs and a few standard type hotels, you could try Hampton by Hilton or Novotel. I’m assuming you just want somewhere non-dodgy to sleep, rather than luxury.
