Just booking hotels in France for our summer holidays and finding this problem! We are interrailing so need rooms in specific towns on specific days, but if you are more flexible on exactly where (or have a car) you could try Relais & Chateaux, pricier country house type hotels, and have you looked at Alistair Sawday tho they do tend to get booked up very fast? THere are also good b/b 'chambre d'hote' listings on gites de france. Finally in desperation I trawl through the lists produced by the tourist office - no guarantee of quality of course but the little family owned places that can be more family friendly are all listed when they don't always come up on hotels.com etc. HTH!

I think you're right sinclair -seems to be trial and error and a matter of cross checking to tripadviser.

Relais are usually very good if pricey but as fingers crossed it'll be first holiday with our lo I'm not sure if a relais hotel would be wasted.

have a good newspaper article on family friendly hotels if you're keen.

Oh yes please I have been trawling the Guardian but it's very patchy.
