Passport Renewal/Issue Dates

I'm really struggling to get my head around when I need to renew my password to be able to travel to EU on hols next year and year after.

Passport will expire June 2028 so for this year and next year, we're fine (we always go away in September).

I was going to renew my passport Jan 2027 but if I do that then my passport wont be issued less than 10 years before we travel, right?

Or do I renew in November 2027 after we get back so when we go away in Sept 2028 the issue date will be less than 12 months?

I'd go with your last option - renew late 2027 so about November/December time.

You base the 10 years validity based on the issue date of your current passport, so it could be it expires earlier than June if you renewed early.

Don’t forget you also need an additional 3 months validity for travel to Europe and that’s based on when you get back from your September holiday.

If September 2028 is the first holiday in 2028 just renew however much in advance the current renewal cycle takes. So early to mid 2028 I would have thought.

Look at your issue date. The only problem arises if extra months were added when you renewed it before. Add 10 years to the issue date to get the latest date you could enter the EU (it might already only be valid for 10 years). You can go by the expiry date when calculating the 3 months remaining you require for EU travel.

Any passport renewals done (since September 2018 i think) now will only be valid for 10 years so you can go by the printed expiry date.
