I'd like to do one of these but I'm nervous. I've never really travelled alone and this seemed like a good compromise but what do I look out for? Can anyone recommend a good company? Bonus points for ones that create good group dynamics/vibes with like-minded people.in similar life stages

Try Intrepid, Explore and Exodus. I and friends have had good experiences with all those companies. You can't guarantee like minded people or similar life stages unfortunately as they will take anyone's money who wants to go on the holiday! The dynamics depend entirely on the group, hopefully you will be lucky but it's never guaranteed!

You’re not alone in feeling that way, I felt the same before my first group trip 😅 just look for smaller group sizes + age/life-stage matching, it makes a huge difference in vibes.

Have a look at G Adventures. I haven't used them myself but a friend has, and loved the vibe. She would be early 50s now and that was a couple of years ago. She went to Cambodia and Vietnam. But there are lots of trips in the "Classic" section that don't involve massive journeys, unless that's what you want!

I’ve been temped by flash back if you have the budget
in your shoes I’d do a fitness camp in Ibiza or Thailand - my friend often does them and meets a new boyfiend each time!

Solos are a good company with a variety of holidays. We always travel with Riviera and they advertise many holidays for solo travellers.

I’ve been with Exodus to Vietnam. They were great. Mix of couples and singles. Everyone integrated brilliantly.

I went to Uzbekistan with Titan last September and it was the most wonderfup holiday. Full disclosure that I did book solo but my daughter ended up coming too.
There were 24 on the trip - 4 solo, 6 married couples and the rest friends travelling together.
We all got on very well- ages between 34 (my daughter) and a couple of mid eighties ladies.
Id never done anything like it before (I travel a lot and don’t book package holidays) and have already booked a trip to India.

I went on a painting and yoga holiday in Portugal that I booked through Responsible Travel. Met three other ladies travelling independently and had a great time. Thought the travel agency were good, they vet all the holidays they offer to make sure they are sustainable etc.

G Adventures have been recommended by a friend. Single in her 50’s. She opts to room share but you don’t have to.

Try looking up Rory’s Travel club. They do solo trips. Mainly Irish and N.Irish people but if you are in mainland uk you might be able to join from a uk airport. The craic would be mighty ☘️
