EES Security delays - Schiphol

Me (old red passport) and DD (new black passport - aged under 12) are due to fly to Amsterdam this week.
Any feedback on the new EES security systems - especially the manual check family lanes?
How long should we factor in for passport checks on the way home?

I flew to Amsterdam Schiphol at the end of March for a long weekend. The queue at passport control on arrival took about 30 minutes (Saturday early afternoon) and none of the new machines were working / in use so we were all just queuing for the manned counters. From memory there were 6 or 8 open. The queue got slightly chaotic as it passed the machines as it wasn’t clear that they weren’t in use. Departure (Monday afternoon) involved no queue at all at passport control. But it wouldn’t have mattered if there had been a queue as fog meant my flight was delayed by 2 hours anyway!

I read this on the BBC website which sounds quite alarming. It does say that the people affected wouldn’t have done the checks on the way out so hopefully you won’t have similar issues.

We went via Schippol to SE Asia and travelled back yesterday and didn’t experience any issues, (apart from one suitcase not arriving yet!), but passport control was very good.

Schipol had started implementing EES earlier so should be ok.

Just to update: absolutely no problems. Fairly quick and easy. I'll update again on the way home.

Good to know. We're flying into Schipol next month. My husband has already done his scans but I've not.

Just to update:
Flying home, the age 14+ queue for the self scanners seemed to be working well.
We were in "other passengers" queue and it took around 25 minutes. I suspect self scan was a shorter wait.
A couple of tips -

  • if you think you need to, go to the toilet before security/passport control.
  • don't join the queue next to the self scanners - they "bumped" passengers who failed the self scan - or at least those with a short departure time - into the front of this line.

I don’t think it matters who has already done scans. You still have to use the machines.

Okay, got it. So, as I understand it, it takes extra time for the first scans to be done and it will be a quicker process going through on subsequent trips? Or have I got that all wrong and itwon't make any difference at all?

(Edited to try to make my response make sense ... 😁)

Hi! Can I please ask when you landed did you just go through to the manual one with your child? Or did you do the machines and then the que for the manual with them. I’m travelling next week with my 4y old and can’t find anything anywhere!

MouldyCandy · 20/04/2026 11:01

@Alr93
I did the self-check in machine one (photo and fingerprints) first as we didn't quite realise the system. We then had to Q for the manual check for DD and they repeated the photo/prints for me and took a photo of DD.

KLM lost a cart load of hold luggage on our return leg, so just a reminder to pack important stuff in your hand luggage.

@WhatWouldRoyKentSayit seemed to be slightly quicker when I went through second time but marginally tbh.
