Rhodes with 7&8 yo DDs in early-mid October

Hi,

I’m thinking about an October holiday for this year – it would be early to mid October with two children aged 7 and 8. They love playing on the beach and looking around little shops and museums and things… My husband and I love older prettier places and we aren’t too keen on heat or throngs of crowds, hence we tend to go away in October.

I’m drawn towards Lindos as it’s car free and probably won’t be busy at that time of year? Would anybody would experience confirm if I have that right please?

We don’t normally go all inclusive as it’s just not worth it for us - we are vegetarian, we don’t really drink, we don’t really like the large buffet style dining. One of my children finds it a bit overwhelming. My kids will use a small pool but - as the pools are normally pretty cold at that time of year - I have found that going to big resorts with multiple pools has been a bit of a waste of money … the sea is much better!

It looks to me that Lindos has lots of smaller guesthouse type places with perhaps a basic pool? Does anybody have any recommendations?

I have also read about Pefkos which has a nice beach, but maybe doesn’t have quite as much there. I assume it’s pretty easy to get from one to the other one public transport too.

Any recommendations of specific hotels would be most welcome. We don’t really want to self cater (it will be my only week off cooking and washing up for the entire year!) but somewhere small and simple would be fine.

Thanks 🤩

Self catering doesn’t mean you have to cook and wash up! It means you don’t have any meals included so you go out and eat at local tavernas etc. Which is exactly what Greece needs.

Plankton89 · 13/04/2026 14:34

Do you have any recommendations @Fends ? Obviously we would eat out a lot… I just meant that I would like to have go somewhere that does do breakfast and have the ability to get something to eat without necessarily having to go somewhere, which my children don’t always want to do. It doesn’t need to be anything special! We also like staying somewhere where there are other people around… So just not a fully self catering villa.

Isn’t that school time?

Plankton89 · 13/04/2026 16:07

🤣 Not one piece of advice so far !

any recommendations @MrsKeats ?

Yes. Keep your kids in school as they have 14 weeks off.

What do you think that comment actually adds?!

Fends · 13/04/2026 16:28

You asked for recommendations on a very specific resort. I haven’t been to Lindos in October so can’t advise but yes, the Greek islands have many small family run apartments.

It will definitely be quieter if you’re taking the children out of school to go yes.

KellySeveride · 13/04/2026 16:47

My advice is be wary. Rhodes is beautiful, I love it there and in fact am going in July. The reason you need to be wary is I’ve been in October and the weather can be changeable-it’s not guaranteed wall to wall sunshine at that time of year.

Linda’s is lovely, pefkos might be a bit small but the taxi’s are plentiful and regulated cost wise so no surprises.

Plankton89 · 13/04/2026 16:51

There seems to be a lot of comments fixated on whether or not I am taking my children out of school – I don’t live in England. You can untwist your knickers now.

It’s nice there but you need a car really, we had one for 3 days, weather was nice in early October when I went though a bit windy. I preferred staying in Ixia as close to Rhodes town. I was b&b as we like to eat in different places

Hi, I’ve been to Lindos - but at the end of May. We stayed in a hotel which isn’t what you’re wanting. What I wanted to suggest is that you ask the questions about accommodation recommendations and what’s open etc on Trip Advisor. I found I got helpful responses from people who go there all the time. Another option is Crete, which o haven’t been to but which may be open a bit later. Last year I was in Skiathos at the end of September and it was starting to cool, but we had a great time.

Thank you I’ll look at Ixia as well

Edited

Nobody said you lived in England. One poster suggested you’re likely taking the kids out of school to go on those dates and I said yes it’ll be quieter if it’s school time. You asked us to confirm if it’ll be quiet then? It will, yes, and probably chilly.

Newbagg · 13/04/2026 17:37

I stayed in Pefkos mid September. Regular bus service to Lindos which is beautiful . The walk from beach out of Lindos is steep with many steps but amazing shops, cafes, bars etc.
Pefkos is quite small but we actually liked it . We stayed about a 10 min walk out of the centre at apartments with an amazing restaurant, covering all tastes and budgets.

minipie · 13/04/2026 18:02

Weather wise I would pick late Sept if you can be flexible on dates. More reliable and swimmable than Oct.

Also some restaurants and shops will be closing or reducing their hours from early Oct. Not all but some. Sept should still be fully open though.

I’d try i-escape for specific hotel suggestions.

like a pp I prefer to self cater in Greece - breakfast is easy, just buy yoghurt, honey, nuts and fruit. Dinner out. Lunch can be either out or something simple at home (eggs, bread, Greek salad, watermelon is our usual). If you go to a non AI hotel then you have to eat lunch and dinner out (on top of a large breakfast if provided) which can get a bit much IME.

There are lots of apartment complexes with shared pool in Greece, probably more than hotels.

No recommendations on where to stay in lindos but we visited late October and it was still warm (26) during the day, the pools were cold but the sea was lovely and warm still. Lindos town was actually pretty busy but we did go in half term.

Dbug · 13/04/2026 20:19

There are limited hotels in Lindos with a pool, most will be outside the village. Lindos will still be busy in October through the day with day trippers but will be much quieter in the evening. Lindos is so beautiful in the evening once the crowds have gone. We usually stay in Pefkos and either drive or get a bus or taxi to Lindos a few nights.

I would recommend looking at Matina in Pefkos, the hotel has 2 pools is close to the beach and has some entertainment in the evening and a kids club (not sure whether it will still be running this late). Pefkos has some great restaurants.

We've always been fairly lucky with the weather in October, but I'd go early October if possible as things start to close in the last 2 weeks. Might have the odd rainy or cloudy day, take a light jacket

Plankton89 · 13/04/2026 22:24

Thanks everyone who has given advice ☺️

Thanks I spotted the Matina on the map earlier so I’ll look into this more 🤩

We loved Rhodes although are an older couple now and our kids are grown up. I can recommend Kolymbia which isn’t too built up and has a range of cafes and shops and a beach. Lindos was nice for a day trip but even in October was heaving and there’s only so much time you’d want to spend going round the little streets.

hellospring26 · 17/04/2026 09:19

Lindos is lovely but it it is a steep walk down / back from the beach and if your accommodation is the opposite side of the road which it likely will be, crossing is like a death trap. We stayed in B.C. a lovely place / just looked and it’s now a massive hotel. You’ll prob need a car if you want to get out and explore.
