Package holiday with things to do

Any recommendations for a European package holiday with lots to do? We’re not keen on sitting in the beach but like to be able to walk along the sea front, and like looking at old or unusual things. We’ve been to Sorrento/naples/pompeii, and Taormina/agrigento, and Malta/valletta. Has anyone been anywhere similar?

Malaga has historical sites (castle and fort) with beaches nearby

This is what cruises are so good for!

We're flying to Malaga in few days and from my research there is so much to do in that area. We're staying near Estepona there is a promenade you can walk / cylce along plus planning a morning in Puerto Banus. We can't fit everything in on this trip but I've heard Marbella old town and Ronda are lovely too.

Split in Croatia has loads to do. Great amount of day trips too, including inland to national parks and boat trips to islands.

Malaga has a brilliant coastal train route. We stayed in Fuengirola a few years ago and got on the train to visit Torremelinos to visit some friends that live there, plus two trips into Malaga. It's a brilliant train.

I have been looking at Malaga so it’s good to know other people recommend it! We’ve been to Seville, Ronda, Cordoba and Granada, so this might be a good time to look along the coast!

Lots of choice in Spain and the Canaries and Balearics. Lanzarote has the volcano park, Cesar Manrique arty stuff, cactus garden, caves. Watersports. Palma city in Mallorca. From most places you can get a bus or train into inland towns and villages, go hiking - I do this a lot in the Malaga area. Loads of castles all over the place in Spain, too many to name. Also Roman ruins on the Costa Brava and near Tarifa in the far south at least.

But what do you mean by 'package holiday'? That's just a way of booking your accommodation and flight on the same booking, which gives extra protection, but otherwise the accommodation can be of any type (self catering right through to all inclusive) and can be almost anywhere and of course, many hotels/apartments/villas are available to book either directly with a separate flight or as part of a package.

If you've not been to Mijas and Benalmadena pueblos, both are worth a visit, also the Caminito del Rey, which you can get to by train or go on an organised tour (we went when it first opened and was free, but I think it's been taken over by the tour operators and Get Your Guide crap now). Nice little free museum at Malaga airport about the history of aviation and Spanish tourism. If you like shopping, there's a massive outdoor mall near the airport too. Good public transport in the area including a train up and down the coast, Malaga city itself is also great.

Agree with Malaga and Split - the latter you can also take a boat out to Hvar which has a lovely little Venetian city.

Other options include most of the Greek islands - I'd go for Rhodes or Crete or Thessaloniki on the mainland. Or Madeira.

You could pick a country then go on an organised tour. Riviera Travel are good .

We ended up booking a week in Tarragona, not a package though. Loads to see, nearby beach plus we’re going during the Tarraco Viva Roman festival! Ticks all the boxes!

+1 for Croatia, especially if you can get into Istria inland.
