What is Antigua like for a holiday?

We have flown through Antigua on the way to other islands like Anguilla, BVI, or Nevis. We’ve never actually spent any time on the island as we prefer more low key / less touristy places. We’ve done package holidays in the past and not usually our cuppa.

What is the island like? We are always surprised by the number of large families on our flights there so presume it’s popular with younger families.

I went there when I was younger. Hotel was on quiet end of the beach and I had a nice time. There were a couple staying at same hotel who claimed it was boring and got themselves moved to a Sandals with a very busy beach with lots of water sports. I thought they were a bit mad to give up such a peaceful place for a crowded busy one! I am not good with crowds and noise, so I don't enjoy crowded busy places.

We did some nice trips around the island as well as time relaxing. My memory of it isn't as somewhere I would have described as very touristy (other than the Sandals beach) but it was a while ago so maybe I'm not remembering things or just viewed it differently when I was younger. I've also never been to any other islands to compare.

We’re here now, there were a lot of families on our flight, more than i expected, it’s a very family friendly island and feels very safe when out, our tour guides did say tourists are the main income for the island nowadays. It’s a beautiful island.

Ever since watching 'Mr Loverman' on TV I have really wanted to go to Antigua, it looks beautiful.

I’ve stayed at Pineapple Beach Club which was absolutely lovely. It’s away from the hustle and bustle but we booked some trips out direct from the hotel. Highlights for us were the catamaran trip, Nelson’s Harbour and the Sunset Party at Shirley Heights.

We stayed at The Veranda which is now adults only. Its an amazing island with gorgeous beaches and snorkelling.
