Crete or Kefalonia?

Hoping to book a villa holiday for this August, 2 adults, 2 teenagers. We like quiet, views, walks and sea swimming. Which would you choose out of Crete or Kefalonia?

They are both lovely. Crete is much bigger with loads of historical sights. It depends what your teens are into but there's probably more for them to do on Crete

For me it would be far too hot to walk on either in August so wouldn’t base the choice on walks. If you go into the hills in south east crete it will be cooler & good walks but that’s a trek from the beach areas.

I prefer the beaches and sea in Kefalonia - there are more little coves with very clear water which is my favourite kind of beach. But this is personal. Crete has more of the long sweeping kind and probably more sandy beaches (kefalonia has some sandy, some pebbly). Agree there is more to do on Crete.

Honestly both have quite a variety of places so it’s more about exactly where you stay on each island rather than one island vs the other. Have a look at specific areas to stay and see what fits the bill.

On Crete I would probably focus on the north west area around Chania and Rethymno. Elounda is popular and pretty but quite developed. The south is much quieter but may be very windy in August. Kefalonia, it would be nice to be near Fiscardo as a pretty historic town (one of the few to survive the 1950s earthquake) but we also liked the south near Lourdas.

Either way you will do best with a hire car to explore

I’d say Crete has more to do but Kefalonia is really very beautiful and gorgeous beaches and has a slower pace in my opinion
