Is it odd to prefer quiet holidays over busy hotspots?

Is it weird that I dislike busy holiday destinations? I’ve had great times in busy hotspots like Mykonos, Santorini, Capri, Amalfi Coast, but as I’m hitting 30, all I want is a quiet beach with one shack and no more than 10 other tourists?

I live in Central London, walkable everywhere, so wonder if this is just an escape from that?

No… everyone loves really busy tourist spots. It’s just you that appreciates quiet holidays

HeddaGarbled · 03/04/2026 20:27

Yes, really odd 🙄

CremeEggThief · 03/04/2026 20:28

Honestly? No of course not.

It is, however, weird to be wondering if it's weird! Why should you care what anyone else thinks?!

Vicliz24 · 03/04/2026 20:30

I always want exactly that too . I’m happy to be in the thick of it if it’s a major attraction but if I’m on a beach holiday im extremely happy in isolation.

I choose quiet spots with the option of going to busier places if I want to. I plan carefully so that I am in a place that's peaceful but within walking distance of a bus/train to a nearby town/city for a bit of wandering. Often I just stay where I am though, and don't bother moving at all! But it's nice to have the option just the same. IMV of course!

DarkForces · 03/04/2026 20:53

The problem is if everyone chooses the quiet spots you'll quickly be joined by the riff raff

Bjorkdidit · 03/04/2026 21:06

No. I arrange my entire life around avoiding anything that will be busy.

Its a much nicer experience. But don't tell anyone or they'll ruin it.

TulipsDaffsAndSunshine · 04/04/2026 08:24

Of course it’s not odd.

Tell that to the instagram bastards! Ruining everything for everyone.

Beamur · 04/04/2026 08:25

Not odd at all.
My idea of hell is a busy holiday destination.

Blueunicornthistle · 04/04/2026 08:27

It’s not in the least weird, but why would you care if it was?

Coconutter24 · 04/04/2026 08:28

Why would it be odd to be at a quiet relaxing holiday destination?

tofumad · 04/04/2026 08:40

I don't think anyone likes busy places, but if you want to see a very well known tourist spot it's inevitable. These days I try to stay a bit off the beaten track but with good transport links, do a raid to see somewhere (let's say the Vatican) then back to chill in my quiet neighborhood.

tofumad · 04/04/2026 08:42

I'm in Osaka now. I had planned a day trip to Kyoto but decided that I couldn't face the crowds. So spentt the day pottring around my quiet and fascinating local area instead. No regrets.

sorrynotathome · 04/04/2026 08:43

Yes, you’re odd and therefore very special, OP

Gardenquestion22 · 04/04/2026 08:45

If I a. Staying somewhere busy I love an early morning walk before it gets busy…dawn time. Then I’ll nap in the busy afternoon.

but mostly hate crowds ….think I always have but only realised it in my 30s.

hahabahbag · 04/04/2026 08:47

personal choice, quite common. I like staying at my bils chalet (in their garden) which is 5 miles from the nearest town

Friendlygingercat · 04/04/2026 08:50

I hate crowds. Noise, queues and gangs of kids underfoot. I have dreams of whipping out an AK47 and mowing them down.

Oh God, yes.

We used to go to the Blue Lagoon on Comino off Malta. There used to be hardly anyone there but we went a couple of years ago and it was over-run with them posing about for selfies and with tripods etc. Not sure we'll ever go again.

MashThePatriarchy · 04/04/2026 09:30

Loads of people prefer quiet places

Shinyhappyapple · 04/04/2026 12:56

What is nice is being able to travel outside of peak holiday time so we can go to popular destinations when they aren’t busy. And we are much more likely to stay in self-contained accommodation than a hotel.

I am counting down the years to when dd leaves school and we are free to have holidays whenever we like. I really miss it 😢
