Is a Crete to Santorini day trip worth it?

Has anyone done the day trip from Crete to Santorini by fast ferry? I am torn between really wanting to see Santorini and committing a whole day of our holiday to a trip. We tend to do our own thing and mooch about at the villa a lot so it's kind of out of our comfort zone to do an organised trip. It's 170e each.

We took a ferry to Santorini but stayed overnight. It was worth it, if you have time to do that. We were doing our own thing, staying in airbnbs in several locations in Crete. Stayed in a cave house overnight in Santorini.

Yes and no... I'd always wanted to go. It's beautiful, I was glad I went. However, it was HEAVING. The views were partly obscured by Instawankers posing for 3 million shots while their sad sack boyfriends held their bags and took the photos. It was very expensive there, in addition to the cost of getting there. Plus the drive up to the top gave me shocking vertigo. But it was beautiful and I'm glad I've done it (because I will never go again!) Not sure that's helpful really!!

We did it. I had always wanted to go to Santorini but not stay there. It was well worth it.

I did it during Covid times when there were no cruise ships so it was supposedly a lot quieter than usual but it was still very busy, however it was a fantastic and really memorable day and I would recommend it! We saw loads, had a lovely lunch overlooking the sea, swam, it was wonderful.

Oh one thing - seasickness tablets! We went in August and as the boat (catamaran type thing) got going we were puzzled to see all the staff lined up with sick bags but it soon became clear why, I was so sick as were a lot of people! On the way back we got seats on the upper level and that was much better!

It was heaving when I was there in 1980!

I did it 20 odd years ago . It. Was a very long day but a great way to see the island without staying there . You see all the important bits but as everyone has said it’s busy .

I suggest checking the number of cruises docking each day of your trip and the number of passengers each of those carry. I loved Santorini many years ago but I’ve heard the number of cruise passengers have significantly changed the experience

TeamGeriatric · 03/04/2026 18:24

I love Santorini, but how much time are you going to spend on the ferry and how much time do you get on Santorini? Also have you checked the cost of booking the ferry yourself, presumably cheaper than €170/ person for the return trip.

We did it from Naxos in June. It was busy but not heaving. I know they've restricted the number of cruise ship they allow in.
