Which is better in terms of weather, things being open, business etc? DS finishes for summer a bit earlier than usual this year, I want to avoid main summer hols but worried it will be cool by October half term?

We went in October last year. Pleasantly warm during the day but you needed a hoodie/jacket in the evening. And less crowded than summer.

Late June will be hot. October can be pleasant but as pp said, cool at night.

Depends on what you want - heat or fewer crowds. So that's June or October respectively.

I went to Rome and Ostia Antica (the Roman archaeology site) last June. I absolutely melted. I'm not a lounger by the pool person, so for me a cooler time is what I'll choose next time. But if you like/need relaxation time, then June is better obviously.

We went end of October is was PERFECT For sightseeing. Low crowds and pleasant weather. End of June would be awful I think. Hot and busy

Both timings have their advantages. Late June will be warmer with longer days and everything fully open, though it can start getting quite hot. End of October is usually milder and more comfortable for sightseeing, with fewer crowds. Most places stay open, but the atmosphere may feel a bit quieter compared to early summer.
