Anyone been to Zanzibar and can advise?

Would really appreciate advice from people with personal experience, please!
Close to confirming a safari + beach fortnight, said beach being a week on Zanzibar. We have one day in Stone Town and then heading to relax.
Last 2 weeks of August.
2 adults, 2 kids 13 and 9.
My questions are -

  1. we've read about the tide times on the east coast being a thing - low tide is right across lunch/afternoon, and the sea is really far away, impacting beach enjoyment. is that true? We've been avoiding the east as a result, but i'm wondering if it's much ado about nothing in reality.
  2. has anyone been to any of - Hotel Riu Palace, Lux Marjani, Mora, or Melia?
Thanks!

I've been looking at the same thing, but only a few days in Z, so will be interested in responses.
Incidentally, I was a bit annoyed to discover there's compulsory additional "travel insurance" to pay to enter Z - regardless of what you already have. A Tourist Tax by another name.

Yes I saw that, too. £280 or something for us all I think?!

We spent a few days there after a safari - stayed at the Melia - it was stunning

I thought it was because of the high risk of catching serious malaria there. Zanzibar the worst place for malaria in the world. Correct me if I'm wrong but thought that was the link.
