Hong Kong Location Recommendations

Going to Hong Kong on the way to Vietnam for 3 nights and wondered where is best to stay to be able to get around easily. Prefer the authentic feel, markets and food rather than huge shopping malls. The harbour areas looks good and the Tian Tian Temple - NOT Disneyland! Thanks in advance.

I would recommend staying in the southern tip of Kowloon. We had 10 days at The Langham about 18 months ago and loved it. Next door to an MTR station two stops from Central and 5 mins walk to the Star Ferry. I've always preferred that side of the harbour and do fins it feelsich more Chinese than the Central/Admiralty bit of HK island and also has brilliant transport links. Also an easy walk to the main night markets. Enjoy, I'm very jealous as love HK!

Would second Kowloon side. That said there are fresh food markets in Central also. The metro is a brilliant way to get around. Chachawan is one of my favourite restaurants in the world if you’re looking for recs.

Other option (budget dependent) is to stay at one of the Pacific Place hotels which are practically on top of Admiralty MTR station- that’s the biggest interchange which connects the island with Kowloon/ NT so good for exploring both sides and good for buses to the south side of the island and the Peak tram as well as direct train up to Mongkok/ Prince Edward where most of the markets are- although manage your expectations on those as a lot are just mass produced junk now.

We stayed at the Dorsett Wanchai over looking Happy Valley Race Course. Would recommend. Say it was mid range priced hotel. Near to metro and tram etc.

very jealous your going to Hong Kong love it there.

@CrushingOnRubies yeah Dorsett Wanchai is a good shout actually. I did my Covid quarantine there - not a typical experience but all credit to the hotel- they always brought my food deliveries up v promptly and the views are interesting

That must have been an experience.

Yes the staff were lovely and on it when we went which was just after Covid. Breakfast was nice with lots of choice. They did a nice watermelon (?) cocktail in the lobby bar.

Again would recommend kowloon

We are staying for the second time this summer at the Harbour Grand Kowloon. Perfect location with the swimming pool looking over the harbour and right by the MTR Whampoa. It seemed a really nice residential area but with a harbourside promenade running in both directions from the hotel and a Star ferry stop 5 minutes away.

Out of the topic, just curious to know that what places in Vietnam do you intend to visit?

atalost · 29/03/2026 14:11

Hi @loopsngeorgeI am flying from HK to Hanoi for 5 days then flying to Da Nang but taking a 30 min taxi ride to Hoi An and staying there 6 nights. I will do a day trip to Da Nang and will certainly be using Hoi An as a base to visit other places and have a day on An Bang Hoi A beach. Originally, I had intended to split my time between Hoi An and then Da Nang rather than doing some days in Hanoi, but would rather stay for 5 days in Hanoi than Da Nang.

Generally, your itinerary in Vietnam looks good to me.
Danang and Hoian are close to each other so pick one to stay is also a good option; Hue is also close to Danang/ Hoian in case you want to split your time between them.
Do not sell Hanoi short.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 31/03/2026 07:25

@atalost when are you going?

Isabelle70 · 04/04/2026 15:20

A bit out of the way on HK island but I stayed at the T Hotel with a friend a few years back. Approx 15 minute bus ride into central. It’s a training hotel, large rooms, great breakfast and very helpful staff. I would happily go and stay there again if in HK.
