Random question if you stay in cottages/airbnb

If you were staying in a small fairly rural Airbnb- one large lounge kitchen, bedroom, bathroom - and the kitchen had a double hob and air fryer but no oven would you think that was okay?
it would be clear in the description.

I would be ok with that as long as its clear in advance. Depending on what else food wise was nearby, and how long I was staying for I would probably manage.

DappledThings · 23/03/2026 12:48

It wouldn't make me discount somewhere and we would probably be fine with it but it isn't ideal.

My parents would almost certainly consider it entirely unreasonable and not book it.

EstrellaPolar · 23/03/2026 12:50

When you say double hob do you mean 2 rings? Or the usual 4 ring size, times two (so 8)? I would be fine with that I think, as long as I got organised in advance and wasn’t staying for very long. I love making things like frozen pizza after long days out, so I’d have to plan smaller frozen foods like chips, burgers, veg… That can be done in an air fryer.

ZookeeperSE · 23/03/2026 12:51

Would depend on how long I was there for. A weekend visit, fine, would probably have planned to eat out. But for a week or longer, would definitely want to be able to cook at least some meals in - and for that, I personally, would want an actual oven. So I'd be fine to book for a short stay but not a long one.

MooBaggage · 23/03/2026 12:51

As long as it was completely clear. The problem we've had (just once) in the past, as regular AirBnb users, is that home owners tick the 'kitchen' box if they only have e.g. a fridge and hob, but then don't explain that there isn't an oven/freezer/microwave etc.

Also, as a Coeliac, I wouldn't be able to use the air fryer as it won't necessarily be gluten free and Coeliacs are advised not to use air fryers that have had gluten in them because of the way they fling the air around and aren't easily cleaned out.

So I would just make a plea for very explicit info and then people can decide whether they can cope or not!

MontyDong · 23/03/2026 12:54

I love cooking on holiday so for me this would be an issue and I wouldn’t book. Am sure it’s fine though as long as you say clearly that there is no oven (not just saying what there is as people will just assume that a kitchen has an oven unless you spell it out)

Lennonjingles · 23/03/2026 12:54

We go away twice a year to cottages, I usually cannot get the ovens to work, so plan around this, if there’s a BBQ we use that, we occasionally have a cooked breakfast so as long as I can do that, then that’s enough. I wonder whether we will see more cottages with air fryers going forward.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 23/03/2026 12:55

Ah okay thanks everyone
looks like a proper oven is needed. And four hobs!

Gingercar · 23/03/2026 12:55

I think it would put me off unless it was somewhere that we could easily go out for cheap meals nearby.

AlcoholicAntibiotic · 23/03/2026 12:56

No oven wouldn’t put me off as long as it was clear in advance. I’d want more than two hobs, though.

This

wellfuckadoodledoo · 23/03/2026 12:58

It wouldn’t bother me as apart from breakfast I flatly refuse to cook on holiday. As long as I can make toast and coffee and keep wine cold, that’s enough for me!

EasterlyDirection · 23/03/2026 13:06

Would depend on the length of stay and how rural it was, if within walking distance of places to eat not so much a problem but if really remote we tend to cook more. I've never used an airfryer but do sometimes want to just chuck a pizza in the oven on a longer stay. Also is the hob a decent induction one. If there are lots of similar properties locally it could be the thing that made me decide against, but if not many other options I might put up with it.

StressyMcStressFace · 23/03/2026 13:08

We always go self catering in an apartment or cottage and this would not be a problem at all

zurigo · 23/03/2026 13:09

For me, that would be completely inadequate as I would never use an air fryer. But if it's very clear in the description and the photos then fine, buyer beware.

Duvetdayneeded · 23/03/2026 13:10

Would it hold a large pizza?!

sixsept · 23/03/2026 13:12

If it's just a 1-bedroom place it wouldn't bother me at all. For a bigger place, cooking for a family, I'd want a 4-ring hob but still would really mind having no oven.

Why not? It's just a small oven?

ChickpeaCauliflowerSalad · 23/03/2026 13:13

@Twoshoesnewshoes

its only one bedroom? So a couple max? Totally fine.

You can't just cut it into slices & cook as much as you want if it at a time.

Maddy70 · 23/03/2026 13:15

As long as it's very clear. I. The description. I can't remember the last time I used my oven so I would be perfectly happy

KitsyWitsy · 23/03/2026 13:17

Wouldn't bother me at all but younger me with kids would have needed an oven to cook pizzas, chips and kid's food etc.

SJM1988 · 23/03/2026 13:18

For a small place for a couple, no it wouldn't be a problem as long as it was made very clear in the advert.
We are staying in a place next week that only has a 2 ring hob and air fryer but also has a gas BBQ. We are just planning meals around what we have.

joyava · 23/03/2026 13:20

We had the oven dilemma & this is what we have in our holiday home. Great as an oven & microwave, we got a separate air fryer as we felt it wasn’t so good for chips.

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 23/03/2026 13:20

Four hobs and a good oven/grill is ideal. People like quick meals when they're on holiday - pizza and salad, Cook meals with veg. You can't really cook a pizza in one and lots of 'quick' meals (including Cook) require an oven for best results rather than a microwave. It's doable to not have an oven, but you'll discourage longer stayers.

But, honestly, I'd have one installed. People are purposefully thick when it comes to booking holiday cottages...I've had some baffling complaints from ours.

Someone complained about the garage being locked (yes, because we store things in there and it's in the description), someone complained that the driveway is too tight for a big car (yes, also in the description). Once we had someone complain that it was open-plan...there's a literally floor plan of the property included in the photos and it's described as 'open-plan living.'

My all time favourite will forever be the person who complained there was no coffee machine - even though it's listed as 'not-included' in the 'key information' - and tried to ask for a full refund😀

So, take from this, people will complain about everything, not read the information and then lie to try and get a refund. Pre-empt that because it's the best way to keep bookings coming - a few bad reviews can tank a property if it's just starting out in the market.
