Donegal - where to base ourselves?

Planning a week in Donegal with DH, and 3 DCs,, ages 5, 3 and 5 months. Not interested in pubs! Just wondering where to base ourselves in case weather is a disaster? Would like to see sliabh laig cliffs, but would there much to do in that area if it rains the whole time? Don't want to be driving too much! Also, any goof beach recommendations would be welcome! :)

That area is pretty remote and not much to do if it rains. Letterkenny is a big town so stuff to do inside with the kids if the wearher is bad. About an hours drive to Derry if you wanted to see somewhere different.
Portsalon is a gorgeous sandy beach if the weather is good.
Does it have to be Donegal? It is beautiful but very weather dependent!

I love Donegal but it is very much an outdoor place and very remote. You will have to drive (no motorways really). I’d probably try in stay in killybegs or Donegal town as you’ve good access to the cliffs/ glencolumcille. Are you booking a house or hotel?

Years of spending 2 week summer holidays in rainy Donegal don't hold much pull for me. If the sun shines the beaches are glorious but otherwise I wouldn't recommend it for a week with kids - unless you are happy in the rain.
