We are going to Nice for four nights early next month. I've never been so would welcome top tips, including accommodation, or the best area to stay. It will be just DH and me. Accommodation budget is moderate, not blow out!

We stayed quite near the station and picked up the hire car from there. It was easy to get to the airport too. The train goes to Monaco which is great for a visit. It might have a new name! The Busby looks to be the new name and we had a room with a balcony. There are various options in that area.

We drove into the villages above Nice and also walked into the city centre. There’s plenty to see and do. Michelin has recommended and starred restaurants so no lack of good food. We went in October and it wasn’t too busy. I can recommend the Chagall museum and the Matisse chapel Rosaire. Markets are good and we enjoyed the villa Ephrussi Rothschild at st Jean Cap Ferrat. Great gardens. The countryside around Nice is beautiful as is the coast.

The Villa Ephrussi is an absolute must-see - just stunningly beautiful.

If you're not driving then consider buying the Pass Sud Azur - it basically covers all public transport in the region - trams, buses and TER trains. You can use it to get to Monaco, Antibes, Cannes, Menton......

Last year my DD arrived in Nice with two friends on an Interrail trip and discovered the hostel they'd booked was an absolute shithole. I managed to book them a room in a hotel called Hotel des Dames for a good price. She said it felt like the Ritz after the other place.

I've just checked them on Booking.com and they're offering four nights at about £250 which is pretty good.
