As per title - what would you do?! Child loves sports and some history/museum type things. Not art, has ruled out theatre (possibly without thinking - slightly wondering about a London show as I type this 😜).
Last time we did similar we went to Dublin, saw Ireland vs France (who fielded top team which was ace) and did Dead Zoo, Guinness factory and general pub/bridges wonderings. We had an amazing time and child has talked about doing something like that again ever since.

Berlin?
Cold War , the wall, the zoo, nice smart city, easy trip to and from airport, great public transport.

patate10 · 10/03/2026 14:48

Yes, good idea! Ive only ever been for work before, will look at that.

Porto? Short flight, only 20 mins in a taxi from the airport. Cable car to get up the massive hill is fun.

Paris if the train would be easy for you - good to cut out the faff of a flight. Montmartre funicular (& artists/buskers), Eiffel Tower, cute shops in Marais/Bastille, mainstream brands on Champs Elysees. Paris Plage stuff if going in summer. Catacombs. Various beautiful parks and squares.

Budapest, good museums (video and arcade game museum was great), thermal baths, zoo. Not too expensive and absolutely loads to keep a 12 year old occupied.

Paris, Paris, Paris!

Rome is great for history. Venice is a lovely trip especially if go to Marco Polo airport and get boat in and then can get boat round the islands and Venice.

Copenhagen if Tivoli Gardens would appeal.

MojoJojo71 · 11/03/2026 22:49

Berlin is a good shout . DD (13) and I also loved Barcelona, Amsterdam and Florence

Havanananana · 12/03/2026 10:23

Copenhagen - much more than just Tivoli.
Aarhus - Denmark's second city.
Pula - Roman history around every corner.
Salzburg - mountains, Maria, museums, cake.
Stuttgart - Porsche and Mercedes Benz museums.
Lübeck - Old well-preserved Hansa city + marzipan.

@DuringDinnerMints - are all the thermal baths 14 plus? Thanks!
