Is anybody delaying booking summer hols?

I was about to book a holiday to Canada this summer and now I’m not sure I want to. Does anyone else feel very unsure about travelling? So much uncertainty and a feeling of anything could happen with the war in the Middle East.

A US submarine sank an Iranian warship off the southern coast of Sri Lanka yesterday, killing dozens of sailors.

Yes but unless you were planning on holidaying in an Iranian warship I think you'd be fine. No-one is going to attack Sri Lanka itself.

We are sticking to Europe this year (already we’re) so not an issue, especially as we are going overland (motorbike). I would be wary of any trips that need to travel east of the gulf, I’d only book places with direct flights and use an abta bonded tour operator so they have to look after you

TokyoSushi · 05/03/2026 15:41

I was thinking about Dubai...

So will just hold altogether for now and probably end up in Spain/Canaries or similar as Cyprus was my other option!

We have a trip to Spain in April booked ages ago but I'm apprehensive about booking another one in the summer. Staying in the UK for now 😐

damelza · 05/03/2026 15:48

This year it will be France and Spain for me. At least if anything kicks off in Europe or things escalate, I have a better chance of getting home overland. And I'd be in Europe covered by the GHIC if stuck there. All important factors.

To many that might appear OTT and what's the worry about? But I'm not risking it and I love France and Spain anyway, so that's my decision!

notimagain · 05/03/2026 15:54

@tutugogo

Don't disagree with much of that but, and I apologise before hand, can I indulge in one of my favourite nit-picks because for once it might be relevant?

I’d only book places with direct flights

Technically "direct" can involve an enroute stop..that's becoming less common these days but a lot of the poor sods on the BA149 that got caught on the ground in Kuwait back in 1990 were on a direct flight to Chennai/Kuala Lumpur...Kuwait was the first stop of the flight.

The vocab has got a bit mangled recently, but it can still trip people up - the crucial thing is to check if a flight is non-stop, and doesn't go "direct" via somewhere you don't want to touch.

@Snoken @ChoosingMyOwnRandomUsername I think you misunderstood what I meant or I wasn't clear. What I meant was people seem to think of you are going on holiday to Turkey you are within spitting distance of the Syrian border they don't realise the distance is hundreds of miles. Obviously if full scale war broke out with Turkey I wouldn't go. I'm laid back but I'm not stupid 😀

princesspadam · 05/03/2026 16:01

No I’m still booking & going

you can’t sit in your house worrying for the next 10 years or however long it goes on for

life is short, do what you can whilst you can

funrunsunday · 05/03/2026 16:08

It depends where you are going. Many European countries will be considered pretty safe and low risk of disruption. Unless things get very very bad. In that case, I think Summer holiday plans will be the very least of our worries!

Obviously long haul is going to carry much bigger risks.

Elphamouche · 05/03/2026 16:12

We have Dubai booked, booked it on Friday.

Tour operators deal with it if FCDO cancel your holiday, not insurance. Tour Ops (decent ones) also look after you if you’re stranded. We’re staying booked.

Yes exactly!

Do people think Greece will be safe?

We are going to Side in Turkey in August, I've already been asked if we are going to cancel it.
I do think some dont realise how big Turkey is.

Exactly. People didn’t stop going to Greece and Italy during the Yugoslavian war and they are much closer!

Crete is as close to Iran as London is to Marrakesh. What do you think?

gemini0606 · 05/03/2026 16:50

I have 3 holidays booked to European destinations over next 6 months and will be going to the ABC Islands at end of year. Not worried at all

mumofoneAloneandwell · 05/03/2026 16:50

I wanted to visit the us at some point, that's on hold indefinitely now

Dubai is pretty horrific in the summer anyway. Better to go later in the year if you do still want to go.

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 05/03/2026 18:43

I am very very glad I bought direct flights 😅

Not for summer especially but I had just booked an independent trip to Sri Lanka (sounded wonderful and researching moving round seemed a much better option to see as much as possible - where depends on time of year). I have zero concerns about Sri Lanka itself but flights there were with Emirates via Dubai and even other flights still operating are mostly going over active war zones or countries missiles have been sent to. We also have due to caring responsibilities and needing cover exact dates and although people are being helped the re-rerouting option you often find out a few hours before its one way each time and for some its in a few weeks time with some not contacted for days due to numbers involved. Sri Lanka does have lots of wonderful places to stay very cheapily but I would be anxious during the holiday about getting back and /or being delayed. If you are booking be incredibly careful with looking up what happens if there's a problem and read all small print.

It looks like we will have everything refunded in full now (well apart from 2 Sri Lankan visas at 50 dollars each but they are most welcome to that and need it far more than we do). Flights have just gone full refund - well I think so Emirates notice isn't 100% clear its looking very hopeful. But am wary of booking something else. It feels very much like when covid hit with things escalating rapidly with more and more countries involved.

When were you meant to be going?

Dangermouse100 · 05/03/2026 19:11

Booked holiday to Japan with flights via Turkey (Istanbul) today. I’m now reading this thread and wondering if I’ve done the right thing???

Dangermouse100 · 05/03/2026 19:13

Booked for end of July. Does anyone know how good trailfinders are with getting you home if needed?

Are they ATOL & ABTA ?

I hope so as we're going to Corfu in July! Booked ages ago.

Dangermouse100 · 05/03/2026 19:36

Atol & TTA but not ABTA

Poxette · 05/03/2026 19:54

We booked a holiday of a lifetime to Australia 2 weeks ago. We ummed and ahhed over Emirates or Singapore Airlines. Flying in June.

Let‘s just say I am regretting our decision.
