Gran Canaria or Fuertevnetura

We love Playa Blanca (Lanzarote) and have been a few times.

We’re thinking of trying somewhere different this October/November and have been looking at:
• Puerto de Mogán (Gran Canaria)
• Meloneras (Gran Canaria)
• Costa Calma (Fuerteventura)
• Caleta de Fuste (Fuerteventura)

We’d want:
– A good family hotel
– Warm enough for proper pool/beach time (hopefully!)
– Walkable in the evenings
– Some decent restaurants nearby
– Not a party resort

Has anyone done any of these with young kids in November? Which felt easiest/most similar vibe to Playa Blanca?

Thank you!

I go regularly to Playa Blanca and every Christmas to Puerto Mogan. Puerto Mogan is my favourite of all resorts in the Canary Islands.

PM is much much smaller than PB but is more charming as well.

Puerto de Mogan is beautiful. I’ve been twice and am going again in a few months. There are lots of lovely restaurants and shops and a market on Fridays. Apparently puerto de Mogan is a micro climate and always warmer than the rest of gran canaries. I’ve been in November and it’s warm enough to go swimming and sunbathe, although you do need a cardigan or jacket in the evening if you are eating outside.

Definitely Puerto de Mogan. We actually stay in nearby Amadores in one of the Gloria Hotels (worth a look) but visit Puerto de Mogan every year when we go.

Watching with great interest.

We are considering Meloneras having enjoyed Playa Blanca a few times, and PdM once. I’m interested in this thread too.

Puerto de Mogán is very beautiful.

We went to Caleta de Fuste in 2024 - 8 of us including my parents, sister and her children, the youngest of our group was 8.

I can’t help on the month, as we went in July, but the place itself was lovely!

MEBBEEE · 05/03/2026 15:51

Caleta is a bit dull and tatty looking but is safe and quiet and really close to the airport.
Calma is nice looking but very very quiet and a bit remote.
Meloneras is lovely, surprisingly classy and quite posh but much quieter than Mas next door although its handy having it on the doorstep.

Prefer Corralejo of both islands though.

Gran Canaria espcially the south does always seem weirdly warmer than anywhere else in the canaries

I did Playa Blanca last year.

I went to Calete de Fueste 20 years ago, it was nice then but no idea now.

Puerto Mogan is lovely, very pretty and lovely harbour.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 05/03/2026 15:57

Playa Blanca my fav by far because of size and sea promenade. Just got back from Caleta - it’s nearly entirely owned along beach by Barcelo hotels now so not many restaurants for evening (a few at the Marina. Sheltered but didn’t enjoy as much. Friend was in Calma who said it was pretty dull.

Breetheandwait · 05/03/2026 16:02

Puerto De Mogan for a charming small resort albeit touristy, Melonares has a better beach, upscale shopping and restaurants and is more modern with some amazing hotels. Baobob for kids is lovely!

Both better than Fueteventura in my opinion it's too windy.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 05/03/2026 17:07

Puerto de Mogan is lovely, but very quiet.
Going to Meloneras at the end of this month.
Went to Costa Calma many years ago.
The fact Fuerteventura is so windy and you’re going Oct/Nov would make me skip the latter. It could feel pretty cool with the wind.
I’d probably go to Adeje in Tenerife. Loved it there.

I was in Caleta a few weeks ago. Some of it is a bit run down and the barcelo hotel takes up a lot of the water front over 3 or 4 different hotels. We stayed at the barcelo mart which was very comfortable. There was a queue for the dining room on one night but we timed it better thx other nights. One pool is heated. Really nice beach with good promenade to walk along. We were half board so just had beers for lunch!! Just two of us.
People seemed to like it for children.

clarabowlips · 05/03/2026 19:51

Puerto Mogan is attractive if a bit artificial and quite touristy, plenty of places to eat and shop, not a party town. Check the Radisson Blu hotel there maybe. The surrounding area in the south of GC is arid but if you travel inland on a daytrip you find greenery and scenery and some nice villages (but you may just want to lie by the pool!)

We went with my sister's toddler to Las Palmas and did a road trip till Puerto de Mogán then up again to take the ferry to Fuerteventura. It was beautiful. We were mostly based on this blog from ferry hopper, making the comparison, as well as this one. In general I feel that Gran Canaria is even more children friendly than Fuerteventura.

MabelMarple · 07/03/2026 10:11

I love Playa Blanca and the most similar resort and my favourite is Corralejo.
I didn't like Caleta but we don't travel with children so it may suit families.
