Best towns to stay along Garden Route?

We are renting a car in Cape Town and plan to drive along to Port Elizabeth. Then fly home.

What are some good towns to stay in? We prefer small family owned hotels rather than international chains.

Knysna, George, Plettenberg Bay and Mossel Bay would be my stops. Make sure you leave time to do Addo for safari at Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth).

Also NB Port Elizabeth is not an international airport so you’ll need to connect back to Cape Town or Johannesburg.

Hermanus is quite nice,especially if you're interested in land based whale watching, if it's the right time of year.
