Spare weekends just north of Manhattan - local recommendations anyone?

Poor dh is away from home again, this time just north of Manhattan. He's likely to have several weekends on his own and I've been trying to encourage him to do some exploring. He's just had an extended stint in Manhattan itself and so would really be looking to explore further afield. Can anyone recommend easy trips he could make, please? Or indeed, any local recommendations at all - he's staying in White Plains.

Connecticut? New Haven would be ok for 1 night - he could do a tour of the Yale Campus (they do guided tours which are, imo, quite interesting) and there are lots of good restaurants and good theatre. Can get the train easily from White Plains. If he were driving, he could visit any of the coastal towns - lots of good seafood and pretty villages.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'd thought he should be able to get to the coast, which would be nice at this time of year too.
