Looking at potentially doing a family trip to Rome or Barcelona at Easter time..Rome is looking to be the top contender..however our holidays fall on Holy Week is it madness to consider Rome that week?

Yes

We went to Rome Easter 2024. It was very busy, but we saw everything we wanted to see and had a great time

It’s really helpful to hear that you managed to see everything despite the crowds.

We went about 15 years ago, booked it without realising what week it was. Had a tremendous time, by chance joined a big crowd and saw the then Pope (no idea which one) in his Popemobile. No problems with crowds but we were generally just sightseeing and it was a nice time of year to go

No, we were in Rome over the Easter weekend in 2023. I mean, there were big crowds in some places (Piazza Navona, the Pantheon) and we didn't go to the Vatican, but there is SO MUCH to see in Rome that some of the places we found were still near- deserted. Biggest problem was that I promised the DC an Easter egg hunt in Parco degli Acquedotti but I couldn't find any chocolate eggs, so had to hide toffees instead!

You might want to check both flights and availability first - hotel and plane prices will be peak, and many people will have booked already (especially as it will be this Pope's first Holy Week).

We're spending Holy Week in Seville and found accommodation expensive due to demand and we booked before Xmas!

TigerDroveAgain · 13/02/2026 21:17

Holy Week in Seville is completely amazing though!

Another one who went without realising, only issue was all the shops being shut on the Sunday I think it was. Got to see the Pope speaking in Vatican City which was pretty cool. I don’t remember it being unbearably busy, didn’t even notice it outside of the Sunday.
