We're thinking of going to Austria by train, any suggestions? We like nice scenery, coffee shops, gentle hikes, horse riding, interesting museums.

Wolfgangsee area for lakes.

Zell am See for the lake and buzz of a larger town, or Saalbach-Hinterglemm for stunning scenery and activities such as hiking, zip wires and rope parks, mtb and less hectic than Zell am See.

Once you get to Salzburg, all trains and buses throughut the State of Salzburg are free of charge for tourists if they get a Mobility Card from their accommodation provider.

If you like horse riding, go to Vienna and see the Spanish Riding School. Book a show and a tour of the stables.

If you haven't yet, read White Stallion of Lipizza by Marguerite Henry.
It's only about 2hrs by train through beautiful countryside from Salzburg.

Salzburg is lovely; lends itself well to slow paced tourism.
Obviously, it was Mozart's hometown and there are 2 building to tour. It is also the setting for The Sound of Music (Schoss Frohnburg) and the Festung Hohensalzburg is a good morning's work.
