Rainy in Tokyo today. Went to Harajuku for a mooch and made a perfume for a present which was fun, at a place called my only fragrance where you sniff loads of scents to choose and they mix them and package your creation beautifully with a label, bag, gold or silver spray etc. Also cuddled dogs and did karaoke!

Jellyslothbridge · 10/04/2026 13:27

Loving hearing the updates while people are on their trips.
Anyone done a tea ceremony in kyoto or kanazawa preferably with a view or garden setting?

LavenderLxx · 10/04/2026 18:51

An opportunity has arisen that means that we might be able to take a family holiday to Tokyo/Hakone/Kyoto for 2 weeks in the school summer holidays - 2 adults and 2 kids.

Is this too last minute to book/plan do you think?

Takoneko · 11/04/2026 01:16

@LavenderLxx It’s not too late to book or plan. It’s the off-season for Japan so I don’t think you’ll have too much trouble finding accommodation. Have fun!

We’ve arrived in Tokyo for our last proper day and the heat has hit me. It was 10 degrees when we left Morioka and 25 when we got off the train in Tokyo.

@Takoneko that’s a big leap in temperature! I hope you enjoy your last day in Tokyo.

thank you - that's reassuring to know.
Hope you're having a fab time!

Just a thought, we've planned out our trip for December and wondered, we have three nights in Kyoto and two nights in Osaka ... we're interested in going to Nara too. Should we swap this around ... reading how touristy Kyoto is, is making me wonder. I know we are tourists but would love to hear what you all think for a more relaxed time. Also, spending two nights after Tokyo in Kanazawa so excited to hear @Takoneko that you enjoyed it. Thank you!

@YoshisAdventures2026i found Kyoto a lot more chilled overall compared to Osaka (Namba area) especially with the quiet in the temples and older areas. Everywhere is busy though.

Fuckingfuckssake · 12/04/2026 15:14

Hello again, wondering if anyone has stayed at &Here Ueno? I am driving myself insane looking at hotels/areas but it seems like a pretty good option.

We went to ueno for the day before we got the sky train to the airport and it was a great area. Very busy, loads of shopping, links to everywhere and a big park.
I don’t know about hotels but we stayed in an APA hotel in Osaka and it was pretty good and they’re all over the place. Agoda in Japan is a bit like booking.com but slightly cheaper and they have lots of accommodation options

26inprogress · 12/04/2026 17:51

Loved reading about your recent trip @Takonekoand so excited for your longer ones, what a fab opportunity!! I’ve been awol for a while, in fact last time I think was just before you went @Pusspot, so pleased to hear you loved it and are heading back.
Also really enjoyed reading about Kyushu, we really wanted to do that for our 2nd trip to Japan last summer but the weather was too wet! It’s definitely where we want to go next.
For people asking about Ueno, that was the very first place we stayed in Japan and we loved it. It’s less busy than the more central Tokyo areas and the park and museums are great as are the local restaurants.
we’re not heading to Japan this year sadly, Brazil and South Korea for us, I’m really hoping we love South Korea as much, I’m slightly worried!!

Actnaturally · 12/04/2026 22:57

@YoshisAdventures2026 Osaka and Kyoto are so close that we decided to stay in Osaka for 5 days and visit Kyoto from there. Osaka was cheaper for accommodation, transport relatively cheap, and we went to Kyoto twice. Took about 40 mins from door to door for one of the days, an hour for the second day as we went a bit out of Kyoto. We found Kyoto much more tourist filled than Osaka - though Osaka was rammed in Dotonbori of a night time, the rest of it was really chilled.

Citygirlrurallife · 13/04/2026 07:23

in the car on the way home from Heathrow, our trip was:
3 nights in Seoul
fly to Kagoshima, stay 1 night
ferry to Yakushima, stay 3 nights
ferry back to Kagoshima, stay 1 night
drove to Takachiho via Giant Camphor Tree or Camoh, Onami Pond overlook, Kirishima Shrine, Arya’s Suspension Bridge, Minato Shrine, stay 1 night
drove to Yame via Aso and the Central Tea Plantation, stay 1 night
drove to Nagasaki via the fruit bus stops and Shimimbara, stay 3 nights
train to Fukuoka, stay 1 night

this was our second trip and we really packed in it. My biggest recommendations are using Yes! Yakushima! For an island tour, staying at the Nipponia Hotel in Yame, making it to Minato Shrine for sunset, exploring the cave shrines north of Takachiho, the cable car at night in Nagasaki and booking a sake tasting which turned into a night of drinking sake with a group of Japanese friends and family under 200yr old Sakura trees in Yame - I know nothing else about sake but did have a wonderful evening!

my biggest regrets are not going into the sea onsen during our island tour (we had teens with us who refused to go and we should have just let them sit in the car for 20mins while we went!), not doing 2 nights in Yame to make more of the artisan opportunities, visiting Arita over Hamami as I later learnt the pottery we like most is made in the latter, not making it in time to see the Memorial Hall at the Peace Museum in Nagasaki, and I wish we’d done 4 nights in Nagasaki and 2 in Fukuoka. But really those are niggling regrets.

hiring a car and driving is really easy and straight forward and highly recommended, just make sure you get your international driving licence and apply for an ETC card if you’ll be using toll roads a lot

happy to give further details and recommendations if anyone would like them!

Takoneko · 14/04/2026 07:23

@Citygirlrurallife That sounds like an awesome trip. I’m so glad you had a great time. Our Kyushu plans are pretty nebulous at the moment but I might have some questions for you once our planning gets a bit further along.

Now that we’re back home and I’ve had a chance to reflect a bit some takeaways for me:

Staying right in the heart of Asakusa was fun for a couple of nights, but I wouldn’t choose it for a longer stay. I prefer to be by a less busy metro station.

Nagano is lovely but not the liveliest of places. A couple of days felt enough.

Toyama is really cool. Loved the local black ramen and the glass art museum.

Fukui was a big hit. Wonderful place to explore with a car for the day and definitely still loads to go back for someday.

We really liked Kanazawa too. Very touristy (in a good way) but not overly crowded.

Morioka is a great base in terms of transport connectivity but a bit dull by itself. We stayed for 4 nights but spent all of our days out and about elsewhere.

Kakunodate is cool. People there were really friendly and the old districts are very photogenic and it was very quiet. We were too early for the cherry blossom but could see that it would be glorious about a week or so later.

We had poor weather in Aomori but enjoyed the Nebuta museum, the Art museum (feels like a Bond villain’s lair) and the apple based goods.

We loved Sendai and Matsushima bay. Sendai has been earmarked as somewhere we’d like to spend more time in future.

In cherry blossom season, Hanamiyama Park in Fukushima is one of the most beautiful places I’ve been and photos don’t do it justice. They have such a wide variety of different colours of flowers in addition to the sakura that it’s a really different experience to a lot of hanami spots. Far more colorful and vibrant.

Thanks for the feedback re Ueno, we’ve booked it! Very excited now. Next is planning some day trips, and recommendations for places to visit on the coast would be appreciated, ideally straight from Ueno!! 😆

you won’t regret it. It’s lovely! Kamakura is a nice place to go. You can ride the Enoden and walk to Enoshima.

@Takonekotrip sounds fab, so glad you lived Kanazawa. We did too. We have Kakunodate and Sendai on our future list too!

Takoneko · 14/04/2026 18:10

@Fuckingfuckssake I’d second the recommendation for Kamakura. It’s lovely, and easy to get to from central Tokyo.

I’m throwing Kawaguchi into the hat for a day trip from Tokyo. We didn’t do it as a day trip, but the bus journey was 2 hours, in a very comfortable seat, for about £10 a ticket, so could easily be done as a day trip.

From lake Kawaguchi, the views of Mt Fuji were incredible, and I’ve been so moved by the experience. It’s so beautiful and I couldn’t stop looking. And the town was fun too. Possibly the most tourist focused place we went to after Kyoto, because there were a lot of backpackers there. But because of that there were some great restaurants and shops in an otherwise small town and it was nowhere near as crowded as Kyoto, especially as soon as you walk away from the train/bus station. We did a lovely walk around the lake, wanted to get to the north shore because we’d read that the view of Fuji reflected in the lake is phenomenal. The view was phenomenal, but the water wasn’t still enough for a reflection. There’s also the chairlift up to the viewpoint for more views of Fuji, and lots of activities on the lake like boat hire. One of the stops on the bus is Chureito, where you can get that iconic view of Fuji with the pagoda, and there’s also an amusement park so you can do a roller coaster with a Fuji backdrop!

I’ve added a photo I took from the north shore. I love the photo but it doesn’t capture the magnificence of Fuji.

Japan Planning Thread 3
Epictantrum · 16/04/2026 09:59

Hi all,
We've just got back from our first trip to Japan and I found this thread really useful so thought I would add my thoughts. We are 2 adults and 14 year old DD and had a relatively short 12 day trip. As first timers we stuck to the very well trodden route of Tokyo-Kyoto-Hiroshima-Osaka-Tokyo, with day trips to Kamakura, Nara, Himeji (en route to Hiroshima) and Miyajima. We had a great time.

What went well:
Kyoto was my favourite place. It helped I think that it rained whilst we were there which perhaps calmed down the crowds a bit. We were only there for 2 full days. I scrapped plans to include Arashiyama and instead focused on a few temples, the Philosophers path, and Fushimi Inari (including the bamboo forest there, which helped with the FOMO of missing Arashiyama).

If like us we are not super fit and full of energy at all times, having a siesta most days worked well. The busiest time for most things was around lunch and early afternoon, so escaping to the hotel room was good. A lot of attractions were open late and Japan is great at lighting things up. Cities are fun in the evening. If you can make it to the To-ji temple light up evenings during sakura time, highly recommend this.

DD really enjoyed having a planned shopping day, which we did in Osaka where there is less pressure of sightseeing. She bought out most of Muji and Uniqlo and I still catch her humming the Donki theme tune. DH spent most of the day in bed as he was so exhausted!

I loved Miyajima Island, it was a good way to take a break from city life and although it was busy there was plenty of room on ferries and crowds could be escaped by walking for a bit.

DD and I both loved collecting eki stamps and she also loved the goshuin from temples.

We all enjoyed teamlabs borderless.

I really enjoyed a splurge we did at the Park Hyatt New York Grill lunchtime buffet; was expensive but I justified it with a big birthday (albeit 2 months ago!) and I'm glad we did.

First night we went and lay down and watched the light show on the Metropolitan building in Tokyo and this was one of DDs favourite things.

Hotels were all great, many of which recommendations came from this thread!

What I would have done differently:
Avoided Kamakura on a warm Sakura Sunday. I can see how it could be a great day trip, and due to our schedule didn't really have an alternative day to do it, but we did it on day 3 of of our trip and it was just far too busy to enjoy it. The enoden line was rammed, hardly room for standing, I was grateful we only did a 5 minute journey on it. I had a long day planned but had to immediately cut back to the basics (this was a recurring theme!). I was glad to have green car tickets for the train there and back.

I would have realised in advance that the Kansai-Hiroshima train pass (which was great value), didn't include Shinkansen from Kyoto (only the Hiroshima-Osaka line). I didn't realise until we got to Kyoto station, and we ended up having to take the local train to Himeji and pick up Shinkansen from there. This took 90 minutes (versus 45) which meant with the queues we didn't have time to go into Himeji castle. Still enjoyed the parks, castle surroundings etc but would have been nice to go in. I think that was the only planning failure!

I wouldn't have stressed about suica cards. Tokyo and Osaka metros you can now just tap and go with a credit/debit card , we didn't need a payment card at all.

Had longer! Another few days would have meant much less pressure on the schedule and I would have had at least one rest day half way through. Japan can be overwhelming and confusing and it's nice to have a break.

I downloaded Tabelog but found it impossible to use, we worked out in the end that you just have to be brave and pick a place from the street, food was always good and reasonably cheap. In particular when we first arrived in Shinjuku the restaurants were so tiny, didn't seem to have any tables we could sit together, and were just generally quite intimidating. It got easier!

Takoneko · 16/04/2026 13:33

@Epictantrum Sounds like a great trip.

I agree about Tabelog. I’ve had a quick look on there a few times and sometimes find places that aren’t on Google maps, but we mostly just eat in places that look good when we walk past. Food in Japan is so good that I don’t think you need to go looking too hard for restaurants.

For most travellers, I’d still highly recommend getting a suica card. Tokyo metro and Toei now have tap to pay but not at all gates. The JR lines, including the Yamanote line, don’t accept it and nor does the Keisei line or the monorail that connects Haneda to the city. Suica (or any IC card) is the smoothest and easiest way to travel. Local trains, buses and trams in most places across Japan will accept suica but not credit card too. I wouldn’t personally want to be without an IC option in Japan. I use it every single day for transport, payment in places that don’t take credit card (or don’t have tap to pay), vending machines, smaller purchases etc. I think JR East are definitely going to resist tap to pay for a while longer and so suica will still be worth getting until they give in.
