Barcelona in August?

We're not going out of the country on holiday this summer. Dd2 is hassling me about it, so I thought I'd try for a few days in Barcelona. Anyone been with children in August? Is it a bad idea? How far is the nearest beach, and is it a nice one? Does anyone know of any decent apartments in the city, or a good place/website to look?
TIA

Not been with kids. The nearest beach is about a mile or so from the end of the Ramblas (main street). I've always found www.octopustravel.com pretty good.

Helsy - We went one November/December with a 6 month baby - it is such a gorgous city - you will have a blast!!!

Just off the Ramblas (you will love it!) is a market - go in - it is just brilliant. We ate seafood in one of the restaurants actually in the market next to a band playing away and spent hours wondering around the place just feeling alive and well! www.boqueria.info/Eng/index.php

The beach is a city beach not the absolute main attraction really but quite nice all the same. If you have a head for heights do the take the children on the cable car - it looks fantastic but dp is afraid of heights so we gave it a miss!

Parc Guell is beautiful and fun for children actually as is all of Gaudi's stuff Barcelona is like walking through a sort of magical world.

The restaurants are lovely. our baby was treated like a princess. The Catelonians are very special people - kind-hearted and not too keen to laugh at our poor attempts at Catalonian!

We had a hotel with a swimming pool - even in November it was lovely - I would definately recommend having a pool to cool off after a day in the city.

On the night train home we tried to work out how someway we could manipulate our lives to ensure we get to actually live in Barcelona one day!!!

GO FOR IT!!!! ENJOY!!!
