Thailand holiday advice

thaiholidaydreams · 21/01/2026 10:44

Hi so as my post suggests , I’m looking for advice for a holiday .
my husband is a mad keen fisherman so he wants to spend a couple of days on the big lakes ( open to Fulham’s, Jurassic the big ones as well as others ) . We’d be looking at around 12 nights , march time .
My question is can you book these when you get there , as in can I book a package deal to a nearby hotel with normal tour operator and just do a couple of day excursions , same as you do on European holidays ,
I’m literally clueless and all the Thai holiday websites say to make an enquiry, but ideally I don’t want to sign up to be bombarded !
I’ve read a lot about island hopping , and seems to be popular , but has anyone any experience of a beach / pool holiday that can also include some fishing ( lake , not sea ) .
Big thanks if you’ve got this far, realise it’s not the usual vibe for Mumsnet but it’s such a helpful group , I’ve got my fingers crossed 🤞

My son lives in Thailand. I'll message him, ask, and get back to you once I hear. They are 6 hours ahead of us so it might be tomorrow before I hear

@keffie12 sorry to jump on the thread. My son is going to Thailand later this year. First time travelling anywhere!!! Does your son have any handy hints (local customs etc?) thank you very much in advance x

keffie12 · 21/01/2026 11:12

@thaiholidaydreams

You were fortunate my son was online so this is what he said. I hope it helps

"Fishing is very restricted here too, there are travel companies here and it's often cheaper to book directly while here but the biggest thing they need to make sure of is that what they are catching & fishing for is legal to fish.

There's a company called Fishbooker that a lot of tourists & expats use

And if they are coming in high season it's probably best to prebook everything in advance as it gets much more expensive closer to and during high season"

keffie12 · 21/01/2026 11:30

@shellyleppardmy lad says this

"Don't be an asshole, don't cause trouble, be polite, don't get shit faced, and oh and don't put your feet on things like chairs etc" is his quoted brief reply.

If he comes back with anymore later I'll post it up here, and tag you.

He has a habit of doing that with messages and adding more later

keffie12 · 21/01/2026 11:35

@shellyleppardHe just added this below

"If he is going to places like Pattaya, Nana, or Walking Street in Phuket to pay for each drink every time, don't run up a tab.

Never been to these places but I've seen enough horror stories to know if he doesn't he's going to get a massively inflated bill in some of the bars.

Those places are also basically for sex tourism and if hes going with friends it's more than likely they will end up in one or even all of these places"

been to Thailand many times and I never book anything in advance. The tourism sector there is amazing and you can book anything you want just on the street (not hotel, usually the same provider anyway just 4 times more expensive).

hairyunicorn · 21/01/2026 12:16

Going back some years, but we stayed in a hotel that was basically little bamboo huts built around a fishing lake. This was in Pai, northern Thailand

DustlandFairytaleBeginning · 21/01/2026 12:16

Book when you get there. Unless you are somewhere really remote travel agents are every couple of shops. Means you can shop around a bit and pick, the prices will be very competitive because of the competition. I didn't fish in Thailand but did in Vietnam and we just booked when we were there.

Thankyou, I appreciate that . It’s just that the kind of fishing he wants to do is very specific , has to be on one of the big lakes , but we ( I ) don’t want to stay at a specific fishing resort for the entire duration . It seems that the big lakes are very exclusive and sought after

DH is a professional fisherman so when we go away he likes to fish, we go for 3 weeks and for 5/6 days we go to fishing lakes.
Our favorite for both of us is https://www.exoticfishingthailand.com/

The owner Mike has just built a swimming pool, the bungalows are good but it is remote ( middle of jungle) that is why we only stay 5/6 night.
The rest of the trips, island hopping etc we book when there. Join the FB pages for info of local tour guides.

Thank you. This is exactly the kinda thing that I’m looking for , I’m looking at a package deal at about 2k per person , but he’s always dreamed of a few days on the big lakes , so I want to make you happen for him, it’s just seems like it’s impossible to get a reply whether they do day or 2 day passes . I’ve seen that name flying around so super grateful of the recommendation 😊

We went for 2 nights 3 days last year as I was really poorly, I would say go for a night or 2 and not just a day ticket, it is relaxing as it is so peaceful there.
I don't fish and even I enjoy it, if you send a message Mike will get back to you and be able to give you all the info.
I think it was about 750 for the 2 nights, 3 day fish that was with food and drink.
They have a onsite restaurant and food is ok.
They bring your food to the fishing shelter!
We have a fishing business in another country so I know it's a good one.

shellyleppard · 21/01/2026 13:13

@keffie12 thank you both very very much. Appreciate it x
